International B-414 scored sleeve and coolant in oil

I just picked up this tractor. The original owner said it needed a new head gasket as the pan was full of coolant. I got it all apart yesterday. The head gasket appeared fine, I found some scoring on the upper part of one sleeve. Could a bad injector cause this or did it suck in some junk? Thanks for the help.

it is possible it could have been low on coolant and worked hot. pistons expand and clearances get tight and causes scoring. picture is best.

understood. I have plenty of pictures. I just pulled the piston and obviously I'll be ordering a new one haha. About to hone the sleeve now. Any suggestions on how the coolant could make its way to the oil pan?

Also, the gentleman I bought it from told me the head gasket blew so his son replaced it. He said it ran for a little while afterwards and started blowing black smoke so he parked it. That was 2 years ago.

I haven't got the diesel engine experience, but w/ gas engines the tight side of piston clearance is usually on the piston thrust skirt side in line with rod swing, 90 degrees to wrist pin.

I understand diesel parts are stronger and beefier for the combustion pressures.

The scoring I see is inline with wrist pin. Does liner look cracked?
I would no doubt check injector for quality of spray pattern.

Have you inspected that cylinder in the head for possible cracking that may be allowing coolant into that cylinder (if even possible?).

I would consider new liner also, considering I assume old piston will be used as an ash tray for pecan shells.

I believe the scoring is from overheating. What should have been done was to pull the oil pan, fill the cooling system, and pressure test it. Then crawl underneath, and observe the leak(s). But since it has been overheated, I would pull all the sleeves and replace them. The sealing O-rings will be deteriated due age and overheating. You won't hone that out, and replacing pistons and sleeves will produce a good engine for along time. Your bearings will be bad also due to coolant in oil. Mark.

Just got back from the engine machine shop. The head has 2 small cracks so maybe that explains that issue, I'll be looking for another head. I cleaned all the transfer up in the sleeve and it looks good. Thanks for everybody's help

You can clean it up and put it back together but chances are you will be tearing it apart again. While it is apart why not do the job right
the first time? You don't save money in the long run by cutting corners. IMO

Is cleaning transfer and honing cross hatch not acceptable on these? Are these sleeves prone to cracking after honing? I've seen people on here and other forums have a lot of success with it and I've seen people only say to only replace. I have cleaned and honed many chainsaw cylinders and never had one come back to the shop. I'd understand replacing if plate is missing. I will be pulling the sleeves and replacing the o rings too. I don't try to "cut corners" but I don't try to send money out if I don't have to. If that were so I wouldn't be trying to find a $500 head.
