OK, I have the brakes off the SMTA and am waiting on parts. I made a run yesterday to get the seals and the O rings. What should I be doing while I am
waiting? The bearings look good and the seals weren't leaking but they were worn. Should I run a wire brush in the holes for the balls using the drill press?
Is there any kind of dry lube that you would recommend for the balls? Should I lightly sand the brake plates? Any instructions will be appreciated. Thanks,

When the parts come the stack of all internal parts placed inside the housing (on the bench) should be measured as follows: Use a straight edge across the housing and measure down to the surface of the inner disc. The total should be between 1/16th (.0625) and .040". this range allows the needed running clearance, and puts the balls down in the lower portion of their groove. that allows the pull links to be at a good angel to rotate the expander with a good mechanical advantage. The spacing is adjusted by milling/grinding (machine shop, not a 4" hand held) the housing flange to tighten the distance to the above spec. Do wire brush and polish the grooves and balls. Balls must be very round!! Dry moly spray (very small amounts) is OK on the splines and balls/grooves. No excess allowed> Jim
 
what i use to polish up the RAMPS is a ball shaped flapper . as for LUBE you can use graphite dust like used in plateless planters. .
