I?m looking at buying a 1945 Farmall M. Are they mechanically identical to the later ones or were there differences in the wartime models?

Far as I know an M is a M. A 39 is different but the others are about the same. Differences will be cosmetic. The rear end plate on a 39 is different.

I got the parts manual, there are some, in the transmision, the timing gears are wider in the 1951, but u can or maybe have been upgraded, and other small difference's.

The ones prior to 1943 had a smaller PTO shaft. A tractor of those years could have it changed out for the larger shaft.

Changes were made pretty much all through production. Unless wanting a bigger diameter crankshaft, 12 inch clutch, later bolt pattern on front engine cover, late disc brakes, bigger bearing on transmission input shaft, latest main shaft and best updates on a liftall unit not to much to worry about on most unless wanting a gasoline, kerosene or a distillate model. Early ones did have some lighter parts in the transmission and thinner engine blocks, but before 45.

as mentioned below the pto was smaller but the shaft size was standersized later on all tractor makers. to find a small pto is very rare but i have seen some. the engine oil filters were bigger but the smaller size were common on the gas engines after the war. the seat shock was moved from behind the seat to under the seat in 48.

A friend of mine has a small PTO for sale if it goes on a project. He does not sell to traders and he's not on the inet
