Farmall M upper hose is offset

I have a 46 farmall M and I recent replaced the radiator. I bought a high quality usa radiator. only issue I have is a LOT of offset at the top hose. I lowered the rubber mounting pads a little but I cant lower any more because of the steering shaft. the radiator fits great otherwise and is of high quality. I tried raising the thermostat housing with 3 thick gaskets but that is too much to seal and it leaked. any suggestions ? just use a straight hose and "go for it " ? its over 1/2 inch of offset which is a lot I think

Unless you are able to find something made for that purpose I would try one of those universal, flex type hoses with the wire inside. Probably have to cut a piece out of the middle to use in order to get enough flex. Good luck!

Apparently that "high quality" radiator is not so high quality. Original radiators do not line up perfectly, but they are closer than yours.

Can you enlarge the bolt holes in the bottom of the radiator and use washers to make some slack?
That's assuming it won't cause fit problems elsewhere.

Mine doesn't line up perfect, but closer than that. I can use a straight hose with no worries at all. Wondering if you got the right radiator. Also, if you got a after market radiator, those are prone to not be exactly as the original. The round spacer washers under radiator should be matching to the ones under gas tank. It's possible these have all been replaced with ones to thick. But I wouldn't think so being off that far. For hood to be level, all washers under gas tank and radiator need to be the same.

thanks everyone for the comments. I really think it's the right radiator because everything else fits so well. all bolt holes, sheet metal shroud. steering column. I did have to make the rubber mounting pads about 1/2 the original thickness but the original was like that also. i def cant lower the radiator or the steering shaft will interfere. guess i'll just have to find a hose with a small offset or something that will flex without putting too much pressure.

Go to the Parts store and get permission to look at the hoses on the racks. You will find the offste you need in some hose for a car or truck (it might be in the middle of the
length of hose, but cutting it to length is just fine. Jim

I put a new radiator I got from this site on my 49 M recently and all went well.

In addition to looking at the radiator hoses at the parts store, they often have large diameter hose that are used as fuel filler hoses in some newer cars. I used fuel filler hose, cut to length, on my Super A a few years ago and it has held up fine.

that's exactly what I will do. i'll take the neck with me and then just try to find something that has an offset bend. good idea.

What do the hood gaps look like? Have you compared measurements from the new to the old rad?

You could try making a wedge shaped pad for under the radiator.
That should cause the rad to lean rearwards.

How about making a spacer to go into the thermostat housing. Have a machine shop make you a steel spacer the same shape as the gasket. A spacer that is 3/8 inch thick installed with 2 gasket might work if the hood will line up. Just an idea that has not been talked about.

I?m with Charlie. But you might be able to make your own spacer with 3/8 or 1/2? thick plate. Use the original housing as a pattern. Neither the inside
nor the outside dimensions are critical, just the flatness.
Hole saw a 2? or so round hole, drill the 2 mounting bolts, trim and grind the outside to your desired level of detail.
You might be surprised at how easy it?s to hole saw a 2? hole thru 1/2? plate, and how cheap a 2? hole saw is.

Turn hole saw VERY slow and use adequate cutting oil.

all you need to do is cut that thermostat housing at a 45 degree at the 90 then trim it with a slight upward angle then weld it back together.! then a straight hose will work perfect.

thanks everyone for the good suggestions. I found a hose on the rack at the parts store that will work. it's more flexible than the thicker straight hose that we are used too and it has a bend in it that will help. been too cold to work on it but will install soon

i like to post follow ups for everyone. there were a lot of good suggestions made. making a spacer turned out to be difficult because there is a bypass slot in it so I didn't try. I walked the parts store too and just couldnt' find a hose that had this offset. so finally I bought a regular radiator hose because they are more flexible than the straight kind you can buy. then I cut a straight piece of out it. I put that in a pan of hot water. when it was real plyable...installed it and it fit fine. I don't think it has much tension on the radiator outlet now. thanks again everyone
