guys : I ran in to a problem I am not sure what is right or do I need to fix. this is a 1964 706 with a dry sleeve motor, the plan is to do a in frame overhaul. I knocked out number 6 piston and the sleeve cam with it, the sleeve pulled out easy after it was above the deck of the block by about 1.5 inches, it was soaked with oil between the sleeve and block wall did not have dry spot. I have not taken anymore out yet as I ran out of time because I had to go to work. I plan on removing the rest of the pistons this weekend and see what I have on all of them. question is there a max bore size for the block for the liners? is there a fix that someone knows of when putting new liners in? or am I missing something as the only other dry sleeve motor I done was a 4cyl Perkins. thanks as I will update later what I found but will not be able work on much next week.

They?re supposed to be a heavy pressed sleeve meaning they?re a bear to get in or out. Older 560 sleeves went in and out easily as you describe. The sleeves are different between the 2. Any chance you have a transplanted 560 engine? I have used locktight to secure them in a 560. I have never messed with a later 706 engine so others may chime in who have who can tell the difference I know there?s a engine serial number break.

The early 706 used the wide flange slip fit sleeves like the 560 did, the late D-282 uses the heavy press fit thin lip flange sleeves. There's a serial number break at 71778 and later used the heavy press fit sleeves. The early engines did have .002 and .010 oversized OD sleeves available too. Look at the block SN on the left side, I'll bet its lower than 71778. I have a 560 that has the late block as it had an IH short block installed years ago. Pistons and rings were the same for both engines, just sleeves were changed. Head gasket holds the early sleeves down, gasket does not contact the late sleeves but seals directly on the block around the sleeve.
