Hi All wondering if you could give some knowledgeable advice on a tractor I'm looking at buying. 1948 Farmall H, with old piston and cable style loader. Looks fairly clean from the pictures, I haven't seen it in person yet. Seller say's it hasn't run in 3 years. Ad says $3500 but seller said they'd take $2500. I guess my questions are is that a reasonable price for a non running H (I'm not really going to give the loader any value it doesn't seem like a strong design) and what are any some known issues I should be looking out for? Thanks in advance!

Thanks I was thinking around $1500 would be my maximum. He claims it was running when they parked it and just never intended to use it again. Price has two things going against it the NorthEast Tax as I call it and also sentimental value it's been in the guy's family for 50 yrs only reason he's selling it is he's moving...

The whole package is worth maybe 1000-1100 dollars. Nothing special about that loader and the rear tires show a lot of wear.

There is a huge difference between emotional worth and reality, sometimes just easier to find another.

Here(western Colorado) a nonrunning H is worth 500 to 700. You can buy good runners for under a thousand.Pass it by.There are others out there.....

"running when they parked it" - Who was doing the running? Maybe not the tractor? Unless you personally know and trust the guy selling it, that claim scares me more than it reassures me!

"Purty is as Purdy Does"
Garage kept?
Not knocking his storage area, but it looks like open air shelter to me?

I have a tractor that was given to me, Cost = Free.
It sure looks Purty and sure does need Purdy lots more work.

I would purchase, if only you have sentimental value in it.
Such as this piece"Was in your direct family".
Too many lesser cost projects out there.
Take the advice of the ones that know like this family on the YT forum.

Note: I am not one to take advice from, as I have been more so, an advisee rather than an advisor.

2500 would be too much for me. I see running when parked in A LOT of ads. I take it as could run with some work, or it's busted and they trying to rip you off. Otherwise it would be running and asking $5k lol.

On the east coast, ppl still asking crazy prices for tractors. Seem to think values gone up! If you really like-need that tractor, then get it. Think Jim's price range would sound good.

Does look like it has been cared for, not sitting in the weeds.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I agree $2500 is still way too much - all the old iron out here is going for crazy numbers. I spoke with them again they say it is running, they just haven't used it. I
told them I need to think about it, information keeps changing. If it's still there in a month might go for a drive and take a look, but I'm not paying for sentimental value - I get sentimental, if it
were me I'd take it with me wherever I was going if I had it in the family for so long! Thanks again.

If that loader wasn't mounted on a tractor you would have trouble giving it away.

He says the gas tank was cleaned out but it still isn't running - sounds like he tried to start it and after messing with it gave up. "Easy" fix to get it running probably won't happen. Overall it doesn't look to bad but the fact it won't start is a HUGE hit on the price. $800 max. If it does start and stay running maybe $1500.

In eastern Ks $500 to 700 for non running decent tires and engine not stuck. Take really
straight good tires ,good running to bring $1500 ,that my opinion
