Carter Carb. on Super C

The issue I'm having is it will flood out on a cold start. I can start it with no choke down to 10 degrees...If it doesn't fire up right away and stay running,,then it is immediately flooded. Plugs are soaking wet with gas. I've rebuilt this Carter carb and set the float level. Since I've had this tractor, I've never had to choke it to start it. It runs beautifully when running...Doesn't smoke black or anything..spark plugs aren't sooty.

Does the carb drip any when the tractor is not running which would indicate the needle valve is not seating or the float is set too high?

Carb. never drips....but I always shut the fuel off. I replaced the needle and seat and I've double checked the float level.

(quoted from post at 06:42:23 02/07/19) WIll a zenith carb. directly bolt on? linkage the same? I can get a rebuilt one reasonable.

The best thing you can do with that Carter is to replace it with a Zenith.

I have this same issue with a carter ut I never turn the engine over more than one turn with full choke cold. . Them proceed to half choke immediately
or you will flood mine. .
I replaced throttle shaft and put bronze bushings get maximum vacuum .
Also the fuels of today has different specific gravity than the fuels of 1950s . Your float sets deeper into the bowl and fuel weeps out of the needle valve.
To correct it require the floats to be set lower to lift float to shut off . Also that if the float doesn?t have a hole in it. Which I?ve had also .
Before I do anything to the engine I run vacuum test on the intake side to see if it between 18 and 22 in hg. And steady needle. I record that and move
to improve .
If needle bounces and is 16 to 17 in of hg ,then you got other problems to correct . .
Always run out gas to stall out motor with tank shut off that way you start from a known point before starting . That way your not fighting t a flooded engine
from start.
It al one rocees on them in most cases it will be good as new . Good luck
Defender I have a super c with overhaul, it runs stredy 21 inches of hg on my gage .
I have and old Farmall c run about 18 to 19 inches with a zenith 386c
As I remember I never had issues with gas 40 years ago , never turn gas off at tank .
Recently it?s a must or it would drip out and wasted my gallons of gas , ❓
My thoughts good luck
