sediment bulb

How can I tell if my thumbscrew to the sediment bulb is open or closed? It also appears to be leaking at the nut before the sediment bulb. Is there a gasket inside there that may require replacing?

If you are talking about around the nut holding the shutoff shaft you turn there is packing inside that nut. You will have to adjust it to not leak yet be able to turn the shutoff.

I am replacing the bulb / sediment glass bowl on my Farmall H. Got a new one from this site, which I will install shortly. Both the new one and the old one, all have right-hand threads. In other words, looking at the knob from the driver's seat, turn everything clock-wise to shut it off, to tighten it up.

All good info...my dad used the string from feed sacks to pack the valve..just unscrew the cap, turning counter clockwise from rear of tractor, wind up some floss, thread, thread tape, etc., then tighten it up. The gasket where the bulb mounts to the valve is notorious for leaking...be sure and check there.

Also, I bought the inside tank filter that attaches to the sediment valve from here...it forces your tractor to use fuel about 2 inches above bottom...really cuts down on crud in the carb/fuel line. Best money I've spent on my tractor.
