MW clutch on an m

What all is involved installing one?
I have a son in law with a loader on an M and he thinks he wants a live pump. I?ve discouraged this due to the weak cam gear issues. I know where I can get my hands on a M&W hand clutch. Thinking this might be a better option?
TIA

don't see a problem with a live pump installed if you have the upgraded cam and gear. plus? its the cold winter weather that is hard on the pump drive. don't know why a person would want a hand clutch unless you have three hands. nothing like a foot clutch .

Getting live pto and hyd via an M&W hand clutch is an interesting idea, that i suspect one or two have tried and changed back to the M&W live hyd pump. And for good reason.

I forget the exact start of the improved timing gear but some late M's had it,All Super M's, 400/450's did too. Used parts are available, the Distributor mounted pump has more GPM and PSI than the belly pump for better loader performance.

Dad put M&W live pump on his '51 M in about 1959, maybe '60. Had a Stan-Hoist loader on it every day since. Loader lifts 1500# at idle. It's the right way to do it.

That?s what I?m trying to avoid.
Don?t have much interest in digging into the timing gears. I thought this might be an reasonable alternative to a live pump. I do have one but ran into the problem of the holes not lining up plus the weak timing gear and thought the m & w setup might be a easier route to take. Tractor doesn?t get a lot of use just playing with firewood and snow removal.

I'm restoring a 41 M and it came with an M&W live PTO clutch. I advertised here for parts and a manual and had everything in 9 days. A fellow in Columbus, Nebraska, had all the internals and a guy in New York state had a manual and a commercial bearing business in Carroll, Iowa, had the thrust bearing. The down side came when 2, not 1 but 2, retired Farmall mechanics saw it, the response was to lock it in and NEVER use it!

Live pump is best, for one thing, you need 3 hands running a loader with m w clutch, one for clutch lever, one for steering wheel, and one for loader control. We had Super M's with m w clutches and they were great for baling, and chopping corn but not a loader.

I agree with the 3 hands. it takes a little practice but you can operate a loader as is fairly well without live hydraulics
blowing the hydraulics over the relief is very hard on the gears. once the loader or implement is raised let off on the control asap

Here's the deal. You either:

need to tear the front off the engine to install the improved cam gears and newer style front cover, for the live pump.

OR

need to tear off the top cover of the differential housing, remove the left axle and bull gear, to install the M&W clutch.

There's no free lunch here, no getting out of this without major surgery on the tractor.

If you go the live pump route, I would recommend skipping right to the IH live pump because it's got better flow, and the price has come down on them in recent years. You can get them for $500-600 now where they used to be $1000. Plus they're new. Can't get parts for the M&W pumps anymore and God knows what you're getting with a used one. They don't take them off because they're working fine...
