460 Diesel power

I have a 460 i recently picked up, i noticed pulling a load up a hill, or any heavy load for that matter, i kind of run out of power when i dont think it should. At the start of a hill it will start grunting louder and start in with some light black smoke as a diesel should then as the rpm drops a little off 1800 or so it stops smoking and starts slowing down until i kick the ta in, once i get to the top and the rpms start to climb then it will smoke again, i may be wrong but shouldnt it smoke more when it really starts to work rather than clear up and fall on its face, any other diesel ive ran you can run them down until its a big black cloud and they keep chugging. Does the fuel maybe need turned up or timing adjusted better, i just had the pump completely rebuilt.

"pulling a load up a hill" more info please! hill on road? hill on field? what gear you in ? 4th gear , 5 th gear on road? how heavy is this load??? a tractor can only do so much.

Going down the road is what I mean, I haven't been able to put it in the field to see how it reacts, I've been hauling firewood in a wagon with it 3-4 thousand pounds probably, it just seems like it kicks in hard starts smoking and working like it should then it stops smoking as it slows down and loses speed, the mta does just fine in road gear up the same path don't even need to hit the ta so that's why I think something may need adjusted

If the fuel supply TO the injection pump, meaning filters and the supply hose is good inside the injection pump may still not work right. When the retainer ring starts failing inside the coffee ground like bits will plug the return line elbow in the bottom of the tank. That will raise the pump housing pressure causing the pump to limit delivery and may even shut engine completely down. Recently repaired and returned a 706 pump for the same trouble. A restricted elbow will upset the light load advance feature that pump has also. Hopefully the light load was correctly set on the test bench.

might sound stupid, but is the filters clean and bleed properly??? did you install pump or did someone else?

Well like Diesel tech said first things first fuel filters check return to the tank . Then there is the fact that IF it is set stock a 460 is and always has been a nice BIG LITTLE tractor . I have ran them when they were new and i have owned one and only one . That tractor fell into the same category as owning a boat or Motor cycle . I replaced my 450 Diesel with a 460 , yea it would DRAG a set of 4x14's in second gear with the help of the T/A . even after some enhancement it was still a DOG.
