Is anyone out there familiar with this problem?

Just wondering how often this happens?
I have 504 w/ TA lever removed and thinking I should pull (I assume "Top Cover") to inspect assembly?
Barnyardengineering sees this lever off tractors w/ bad TAs.

Would it help any to put a washer behind cotter pins to keep it from being sheered or worn in two by lever movement.

It looks like to me, none of the cotters have any sort of washer behind them to help protect pin from being worn.

OR are the pins installed to keep the slack of pin pushed to the trailing side by engine rotation direction while turning, keeping pressure off cotter pin, thus possibly wearing/cutting it less?
:?: What model His share same TA as 504 w/ Diesel D188? :?:

I believe the 504 has the mechanical TA and should be the same as the SMTA, 300, 350, 400, 450, 340, 460, 560, 660. If I am wrong on this
someone please correct me.

Well I was ready to chime in to question what tjv is saying was acurate about so many models
using the same TA. But indeed after comparing part numbers on the online parts book he is sure
enough correct. A major part of the TA assembly called the..ramp..is listed under the same part
number in the 350, 400, 504 and the 656. On the farm I grew up on in KS we had a 350 and a
656, I would not have not guessed that the TA in those two tractors was nearly identical physically.
Oh well learned something new there. I?m attaching a link to the CaseIH online parts book for your
504. If you feel you need a working TA in your tractor you may as well pull it apart and fix what it
needs. About the washers by the cotter pins I doubt it will change the longevity of your TA very
much. If the TA is repaired and or rebuilt correctly unless you plan to run up 500 hours a year on
this tractor or abuse the TA it will be operating just fine for many years. Best of luck with your
tractor.

Thanks so much TJV and Used Red MN for the input to my question!

I am hoping the lever is all it needs, but not gambling on it.

I have yet to get it running, but at least found reason for 5 gallons coolant in crankcase. Busted liner from weak anti-freeze.

I am hoping to find TA lever after I get it running, in frame overhaul only hopefully.

:!: Thank You "used red mn" for turning me onto the official IH parts catalog system :!:

:( I have begun my search for removed TA lever assembly (not cheap) to reinstall on possibly nonoperating TA :?: Anyone have a quality Tractor Boneyard with 504 TA levers available. So far $150-200 is goingish price, depending on quality.

1)Are these levers all the same?
2)Would the models that share this similar TA system possibly work on 504?
3)What models would I at least look for, or would the boneyard know that info?

Or, should I just visit my local boneyard for this.

By the way, This site is AWESOME :!:
