4230 case-ih steering problem

I have a 4230 case-ih. Just installed a new hydraulic pump in the tractor. Appears that all systems function but the steering. When trying to steer right or left the system seems to load up and the wheels do not turn. Before ordering a new steering valve I was wondering if there might be something some of the other forum users that may have had this problem and what they did to solve it.

Why was the pump replaced, and was there metal filings in the system and filter(s)?

Yes there were filing in the system.

Hi, was the PS working before replacing the hydraulic pump? Is there anything preventing the front wheels from turning?
If the tractor has a loader on it, lift the front end off the ground with the loader and verify the the front wheels can be turned
freely left and right.
I seem to recall there is a check valve in the power steering steel line coming out of the MCV valve. I looked for in the CaseIH
parts manuals but could not find it. Is it possible the check vale was installed incorrectly when the hydraulic pump was replaced?

Really appreciate your response. When the tractor was taken to a case-ih dealer the power steering was working. The HYD pump was really destroyed but was having some power but really weak.. The mechanic found a lot of shavings in the MCV valve. The mechanic also said that the transfer pump was not working. The transfer pump appeared to be pumping because the fluid was coming out of the return line for the oil cooler with engine running and the MCV and pump removed. I had made a plexiglass window to see if the oil level stayed up this let me run the tractor without the MCV valve and pump installed. There is no screen on the transfer pump I do not know if I can get to it to replace it evidently left out from a previous repair This looked like the transfer pump worked with the oil cooler according to the HYD schematic you posted. I suspect there is trash in the steering valve. Can the steering valve be cleaned or do I need to buy a new one. I thing there is a valve in the pressure side of the steering pump. Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi, I have never had a steering hand pump apart. With engine off, you should be able to manually crank the steering wheel left
or right and it should turn the front wheels but if it is 4WD it will be difficult and if you have a loader you can lift front
wheels off the ground and the wheels should turn easier. I would do some more diagnostics before removing the steering hand pump
like removing the lines to the front steering cylinder and point them into a clean bucket and with engine off try turning the
steering wheel both directions and see if hydraulic oil comes out the PS steering pipes. If you have the pipes secure in the
bucket then you can start the engine and move the steering wheel and hopefully blow the dirt out into the bucket. Hopefully
front steering cylinder is not plugged.

Re the hydraulic system diagram is not 100% correct for 3230/4230 series as CIH redesigned the range transmission to make a
better hand brake system, T/A and the drive shaft for front wheels comes out the bottom center now instead of the right side.
I am not sure if the T/A pump is still present or if it runs off the main pump now but the T/A is now controlled by an electric
switch on the left side of dash. Somewhere I had the details of the update but cannot find them right now. Also there is no more
transfer/lube pump low pressure warning light on the dash.

Re steering hand pump from an experienced IH mechanic,
"The 74 and 84,85,95 series, use a Danfoss steering valve. You have to remove all the valve from the tractor and open the valve
to change the seal. Some parts inside have to be timed, so if you haven't opened a Danfoss valve before, good luck. Best way, to
take the valve to a CaseIh dealer and ask to change the seal. To install the seal, you need a special tool. Be careful when you
remove the steering wheel, don't hit the shaft with a hammer, remove the wheel with a puller. I have done many seal change when
I have worked for CaseIh dealer." Benard le mencano

I will also look for info on transfer/lube pump.

Hi, do you have a shop manual?
According to my I&T Shop manual there is a procedure to remove/replace transfer/lube pump by using both the MCV valve access and thru the PTO clutch cover.

I do have a shop manual. Thanks for your help. Today we removed the fitting to the steering cylinder, the steering wheel would free wheel in each direction. Attached the fittings to the steering cylinder and then cranked the tractor and with it idling we could turn the front wheels in each direction. We did put about 12.5 gallons and a gallon of Lucus hydro booster. The system is quiet and works very well. I think that we might have had a faulty hyd pump before. When we started the tractor with that pump you could immediately hear a grinding noise. The oil level shows about three inches above the fill mark. Hope this works out.
