HELP - Farmall A Transmission noise

Hello all, I'm working on bringing a Farmall A back to life. I got the tractor running however it makes an awful really loud knocking/rattling/jackhammer noise when the clutch pedal is pressed. I can press the clutch quickly to get it in gear and once in gear with the clutch pedal released it drives fine. The noise only occurs when the clutch pedal is pressed and will stop only when the pedal is released.

I think the sound is coming from the coupler just in front of the transmission and it appears to have some free play in it.

What are your thoughts/advice before I split the tractor?

Sounds to me like the throw out bearing. At the bottom of the clutch housing should be a inspection cover. Remove it and look up a the clutch and bearing.

(quoted from post at 10:00:01 01/30/19) Sounds to me like the throw out bearing. At the bottom of the clutch housing should be a inspection cover. Remove it and look up a the clutch and bearing.

I have and everything looks pretty good up there, I can push the clutch pedal in and the noise does not start instantly, it only happens when i hold the clutch pedal down. So I think the throw out bearing is fine.

Should the coupler connecting the driveshaft to the transmission have play in it? it looks like it can move 1/4" back and forth when rocking the PTO shaft and looking up at the coupler

I have an Oliver 60 that does the same thing. Push it in too far and the Throwout bearing assy hits the pressure plate fingers. You can even feel it in your foot through the pedal. just let it out a bit and the sound and rattle goes away.Done that way for years with no adverse effects

Please explain things a bit better. So are you saying the noise starts when you have pushed the pedal down all the way if yes good chance it is out of adjustment and the throw out bearing is being pushed down to far and hitting the clutch disk. Push the pedal down say half way and try to put it in gear. If you can shift it that way good chance the clutch is way out of adjustment.

Like the other guy said I to have an Oliver 77 that if you push the pedal down to far it will make a bad noise

It happens whenever you start disengaging the clutch (when you push the pedal down then feel the pressure of the bearing starting to push on the fingers).

Upon further inspection behind the flywheel, I found shards of what used to be some bushing coming from between the clutch and flywheel.

I will attempt to split the tractor tonight and see what's damaged.

Would you guys recommend I also remove the drive shaft to tighten up the slop in the coupler on the transmission?

I'll almost bet you will find the throw out bearing is bad and also good chance the pressure plate is also

after splitting and you can move it back and forth yes and while you are working on the coupler I would replace the input bearing and seal on the input shaft of the tranny

Alright, guys, the tractor is split.

The problem was the clutch bushing broke into about 20 pieces and they were all riding between the flywheel and pressure plate. (hence the rattling when the clutch pedal was pushed.

While I'm in here I'm going to replace the throw out bearing.

The clutch pressure plate and disk look ok. They are all perfectly smooth and the fingers look to be in good shape.

1. I don't want to spend the money on a whole clutch kit. How can I tell if the pressure plate needs replacing?

2. Also when I put everything back together does the bushing receive any lubrication or does it stay dry?

3. Any other tips before I bolt the tractor back together?

Thanks in advance

I attached some pictures of the operation below. I had limited resources to make the stand but they work!
