MW Clutch on an H

I'm trying to remember the benefits of an M&W clutch. If I recall correctly you use the hand clutch and you essentially have independent PTO and hydraulics, if you use the foot clutch the PTO and hydraulics stop when the clutch is pushed in.

I've seen a old H for sale with the M&W clutch but the handle has been removed - is there a common reason for this? If the M&W clutch is worn out does the tractor not move?

If the actuating linkage and throwout are toast it will transmit power. If it has been taken apart and made into a solid drive driven screwed together mass, not so much fixable without $$. It is certainly a desirable feature if working. Jim

An M/W hand gives live power to an H or M. Pull/snap the handle back, forward motion stops,PTO continues to run. Step on the foot clutch, everything stops. The M/E unit basicly just disconnects the left side differential/final drive. The only way to really find out is to take it apart and see. Or you can come up with a temporary handle .The casting is threaded to 3/4 fine thread. find a bolt, weld a 3 ft. pipe handle to it.

A common reason to take the handle off is because it don't work anymore. Either it no longer disengages or it disengages but will not engage again, leaving you stranded.

Parts are no longer available. Your best bet would either to let sleeping dogs lie, or replace it with a standard bull pinion and carrier (some disassembly of tractor required). Hopefully the unit will have some usable parts that you can sell so that other M&W units may live on.

The good news is that it is easy to work on. I have 2 on M tractors and really like them. I am reasonably sure that someone out there still sells the fiber discs for it. When I bought my first M in 1973 it had one and I had NO IDEA what it was. It had been bolted together like Jim alluded to. To me they are like live power and a TA because you can slow down just to go a little slower or to bush hog a large clump. Ellis
