Farmall B starter switch

Working on a 42 Farmall B that ran when I bought it but was leaking gas all over. Got fuel system all done and put heavier cables from battery to switch and starter. Was seconds from the glory of getting her started again and now push button switch from TS keeps smoking. I?m assuming I need to add in a solenoid but weirdly the original push button switch was starting it before albeit it was heating up. Tried jumping straight to starter post and starter won?t turn so I?m now fixing that. Sorry for long post but are most of you guys putting a solenoid in line to starter?

original B had pull rod with switch on starter. Are you 6 volt pos + ground? If smoking,
I would say starter jammed or you got wires hooked up wrong.

Like oldiron said, you don,t need one unless you put in a push button, but that's what i did, much easier, especially for me, and the grand kids !!

#1 sounds like the starter it self has gone bad.
#2 getting a starter switch form TSC is getting nothing but a land of almost never right part.
#3 buy a good starter switch form say O'Reilly's or NAPA.
#4 replace or rebuild the starter

Yep it?s that gold colored push button switch from TS and it is a 12 V system. Of course I just burned the new push button so I?m gonna have to come up with a plan once I fix starter

Yes. Starter jammed. Loosen the starter mounting bolts and pull the starter back. Listen for a click. When you hear it, tighten the bolts and you should be good to go.

get a wrench and remove the starter its probably locked up on the flywheel. You don't use a solenoid as you have the button on the started that uses saddle mount sw unless someone has mounted a threaded stud instead of the button. Original starter was Delco Remy with button that you pushed to start but over the yrs things get changed and are not original the tag should read 1107021

Yes. It?s a threaded stud with cable going to push button switch mounted in dash pot on steering post. Was converted to 12v before I owned it . Was starting and running but the switch was getting hot if it took too long to start. Positive battery cable went into one side of switch with other sides cable leading to starter stud.

That push button switch getting hot is a pretty sure sign of the starter getting bad and pulling way to many amps so in turn the switch gets hot. I bet it you take that starter and have it tested it will test bad unless it is in fact lock in the ring gear like a couple of the other guys think.

I have the same type of switch set up on my BA

Just so you know, some of those aftermarket push button switches are not very good. China did not put them together quite right.

There is no dash on a Farmall B . The switch is mounted on starter like Photo. My 47 B is one of the last ones built and it has this setup.

Yeah I got this tractor already modified to 12v with a push button up by steering wheel and a post on starter. What I?m calling a dash for lack of better word is oval can where I?m assuming an ammeter used to be

Got a new starter in last night but still thinking I may need to add a solenoid. I?m just not real certain where to wire two wires from back of push button switch.

It's real simple: Battery post to one terminal on the button. Other terminal of the button to the starter post.

What you have is not a stock setup, but it will work just fine.

There's nothing wrong with the TSC buttons. They are the same buttons you get at NAPA because they all come off the same assembly line in China.

You ruined both buttons with a bad starter. Get the starter fixed and put a new button on, and everything will be fine.

Never seen one like that how does the "cover" on the mounting bolts come off. I have been around those tractors since 47 but never have seen a set-up like that I have a 47 B built in August 47 nothing like that. Mine is a Louisville model not Chicago.

where did that starter come from sure isnt a B. looks like your tractor has been changed from original but over the yrs people just didnt keep them original and now you have a problem.

Yes it?s been converted to 12v with a 12v starter wired to a push button switch as pictured instead of the stock saddle switch. I don?t even have the original rod that actuated the saddle switch so I?m just trying to get it working with a push button
