POWER STEERING ON H

I'm looking to buy the crankshaft pulley for my power steering project on my H. I've found lot's of listings for this pulley BUT none of them say it WILL work on an H. Many including right here in this site lists them for M, Super M, MTA, 400, and so on. Found a couple of sites show 2 different part numbers same description and fit for both and 2 prices but appear to be identical other than price. Best price is right here on YT website but does this fit my H and allow a proper installation? I've found 3 part numbers all for what appear to be listed for the same exact applications I mentioned here. The part numbers are Eaton or Char-Lynn 5515, IHS1420, and UT20094. Please clarify this. Also for clarity are the mounting brackets all show for mounting on an M, Super M ETC.. but not for an H. My pump is the Eaton pump shows bracket for M Eaton 20969, The torque generator mounting plate Eaton 121. Says for M. Is the H same part? Also can I run universal hydraulic oil in my Eaton pump as I have a reservoir for my live hydraulics with approx. 7 gallon reserve already or is ATF needed as I also have the reservoir for the Eaton pump if that's what needs to be used. Sure appreciate some help in clarifying all of this. Maybe things will go smoother if I ask ahead. Then we can GIT UR DUN! And maybe right too!!!

Yes I am the guy that was asking about the priority valve. I got a Prince priority valve. When I called to order they said I should use an RDRS-175-30 adjustable valve so I got it. Since I am using this Eaton pump and unsure of my pressures they suggested this route to make certain i could adjust the pressure, flow, and bypass. It was their suggestion due to the unknown but I did ask about the valve RD-400R. So with that behind me I'm working on the remaining parts for the steering. Now with your suggestion on the priority valve I believe this is adequate to move forward. Is there an issue with this as well?

I added Eaton- Charlyn power steering to my 1950 H. Mounted the pump {Eaton} on left side and runs off water pump-gen pulley belt. Made my own res. out of square tubeing{ holds about a quart} for oil and tucked it between manifold and valve cover. The Charlyn torq. gen. requires a shim that I got from Steel Wheel Ranch {can find them on here} was a little pricey but works great. If I had pics. I would send to you. I have a belly mower on this tractor and steering is better than my 460.

Maybe I am not followint this correctly, but I don't understand the priority valve and separate PS pump. Are you using the eaton pump for PS and other hydraulics? I have an SMTA with live IH pump and have ps on a adjustable priority valve. I am looking at adding a separate APS pump as the 3 point is really slow. I found a pulley, one with tapered cneter to clamp down, and plan to add a separate pulled to crankshaft instead of purchasing the "half pulley" that was used in the kit.

You are pretty much on your own mounting power steering on an H. Like I said earlier, they never manufactured a pulley for the H, and to add to that, they never manufactured specific brackets for the H for any of the power steering parts.

The M brackets are all wrong for the application. That's not to say they can't be modified, but none of the bolt holes will line up, and they may not fit in the space available.

To add further, as expensive as it is, not many people are really looking to go through with adding power steering once they see the cost. H's steer pretty easy on their own, so there is practically zero demand for parts, and only barely enough demand for the larger, harder-steering M tractors to warrant producing parts.

Hi;
I currently have live hydraulics on my H with a front end loader a three point and now the power steering. There is just no way to steer this thing with a bucket full of soup from the barnyard. It's way to much on the front for the power steering by armstrong to maneuver around. I appreciate the information greatly and will start my fabricating as soon as it get's a little warmer outside. No need in heating the machine shed in this bitter cold. In SE Minnesota here. Thanks Very Much!!!!!

Hi David;

I understand I likely wouldn't need the priority valve with a dedicated power steering pump and unfortunately I didn't get one question answered and that was, can I use universal hydraulic oil in my Eaton power steering pump? If it will work, I'll run both the 3 point and P/S on the Eaton pump. Currently using a manual switching valve from front end loader to 3 point when needed. No matter what it will be used in replacing my manual valve!! All input is appreciated.

I use HyGuard in all my stuff, PS included, would use low viscosity HyGuard in PS if out in cold.

Hey Cuby;

I must ask. You said you made you own reservoir and mount. Also more important to me is you said about one quart of oil. Do you use P/S fluid/ATF in it or what kind of oil? Hoping to use universal hydraulic oil but may possibly too thick I'm afraid. If P/S fluid is necessary I have a P/S reservoir from a 61 GMC truck and will hold 1/2 gallon of P/S fluid or ATF and will mount it on the one support for my bucket frame. Thus the reason for preferring the hyd. oil. I have a 7 gallon reservoir already for the hyd. oil for my M&W gear drive pump to run the loader and 3 point. Hydraulic oil or ATF? That's my dilemma.

You do not need/want a manual valve to switch between loader and 3 point, the valves should be open center (OS), just run valves in series.

Hi again David;

I see you referred to HyGuard and HyTran. Currently using universal hyd. oil with Lucas additive. So I'll change over to HyGuard or HyTran whichever is the correct one and I'll be certain to look for low viscosity. I've been using the manual switching valve on my loader and 3 point for about 4 years already. It works great, but the priority valve will make life even simpler. I have 4 grandsons that love riding on the tractor and HELPING Grandpa. Only 1 at a time of course. I mounted a seat for them but their feet are really busy. They bump the 3 point joy stick and the loader would bounce up or down so it was necessary for a valve or I'll have to fire my helpers!!!! LOL Should I be looking for HYGuard or HyTran ?

You do NOT want a priority valve on an center hydraulic for the two devices, just pipe in series.

Hy-Tran might work in a dedicated power steering set up, but I would be more comfortable using auto trans fluid. Something like what Ford used to recommend.

(quoted from post at 19:36:54 01/29/19) I am attaching my email, send me an email response, will just talk that way.
Hi David;

I didn't see anything about your email but I will give mine here. My neighbor that has put P/S on all his tractors has put the Char-Lynn kits on at $850.00 ea and put that on 11 of them. Too much but all of them are M's Supers and MTA's. At this time I haven't much interest in doing much till it's a bit warmer. LOL It was 33 below last night here and 20 below now so a bit too cold to deal with any of my project. Been fortunate all of the machinery and vehicles are starting. I'll keep in touch if it ever warms up and get in touch. As far as oil in the Eaton pump what are you suggesting HyGuard or HyTran. You can send it to me in email @

Frankenford1 I have power steering on my ole H I delt with mike bunch (sp) at the steel wheel ranch he was able to fix me up with the parts he's old school ya have to call him I think he will help you out with the parts 785 548 7437 I assume he is still in the business its been a few years since I did mine

What you use for hydraulic fluid is less important on your H than it would be on something fairly new that had a fancy powershift or CVT. Hytran or equivalent is just fine in the power steering torque generators. Depending on what "Universal Hydraulic Fluid" you are using it is just fine too.

A priority valve is for steering vs. everything else. It will not work to separate the 3pt and loader. Either the 3pt or the loader will end up working VERY slowly.

Frankly, a gentle elbow in the ribs and a reminder to "stay still or Grandpa's going to kick you off the tractor" would be the best solution to the "happy feet" issue. You can't work safely with a fidgety kid onboard.

Barnyard Answered your question about the oil. As long as you are using the same reservoir for both steering and hydraulics you could use any of the oils that have been mentioned. If you are going to separate them you could also use the same oils. You just don't want to mix the transmission with the hydraulic oil as it will flow to slow if at all till it gets warmed up.
As for power steering on an H I always thought they steered pretty easy already. Though never had a loader on one.

Hi TNT;

I think I'm gonna take you up on that. A world of knowledge in experienced minds ya know. I'm a diesel man by trade. 1973 started on diesels in the USMC. Spent 9 years on the multifuels and diesels and stayed with diesels since. I love big bolts hi torque, and lot's of power. My passion is bow hunting my Chevelle collection and playing with old tractors. My last tractor restore was a JD G. Got Dads old 8N we rebuilt and Dad bought this H for me shortly before he passed we worked on it together so it's going to stay here till I'm gone. So I very much appreciate the information and I'm going to try your contact because I want to finish this up right for Dad. Thanks everyone for the information!!!!!!!!!

Hey Barnyard;

The grandkids seat I mounted for the has a safety belt and they don't ride unless they're belted down. Problem being it was perfect for any of our grandkids of which there are 11 of when I mounted it they were fewer in number and a lot shorter but now the legs hang low enough they even bump the 3 point handle and don't realize it. But too soon they'll all be outgrown for this and want to drive the tractors but great grandkids are soon going to be big enough and wanting to ride too. They're very well safe enough though!!!! Thanks for the thought and safety is my biggest concern too!!

Hi David G;

Just wondering if you did send your email address? I didn't see it. Also wondering if you got mine if your still around here!
