International 574 Wiring Problems

I purchased a 574 a year or so ago.

I discovered that none of the lights,or gauges (other than tac) work.

Also the keyswitch was routed around with a remote starter. If the keyswitch was bad/incorrectly would that cause the lighting
issues? Also appears to have an alternator instead of generator or a different brand alternator, as there are 2 wires unhooked from
it. Could this cause issues with power lights/gauges?

I am setting out to fix the wiring and get everything going, but the stuff behind the instrument panel is a mess.

Also, had a low battery and tried to start it, didn't start. I went through and changed terminal ends and the battery. I went to
start it recently and it basically keeps cranking now, regardless of if I am hitting the remote start or not, if the battery is
hooked up. I've tried hitting the solenoid, but no dice. I assume I welded the contacts trying to start it with lower power. Sound
plausible?

Thanks

You can download the factory wiring diagram at the link below (.pdf).

Early models had an alternator with an external regulator, later had an internal regulator.

If an early model, a P.O. may have swapped out the external regulator alternator with and internal regulator alternator, or a "one-wire" internally-regulated alternator, or if later model, the alternator may have been replaced with an internally-regulated unit.

Whatever went on there could explain the extra wires, or maybe someone just didn't connect 'em up, LOTS of possibilities there.

Lights aren't wired through the ignition switch, but are fused near junction block.

If you can read a wiring diagram, you should be able to figure out what's going on.

Post back with more info on the alternator (photo?) if you need more help.

Hi is your 574 Gas or Diesel? I know the Diesel version the light switch is independent of the key switch. There are a only a couple ground points for the lights and a couple plastic electrical connectors that give problems. On some models there is a plastic electrical connect on the left side under the battery box that all the wiring for engine, head lights except starter go thru. This makes splitting the tractor easy but the connector can cause electrical problems. There is one ground for the head lights. Same on the rear there is an electrical connector by the back of the seat that all rear electrics goes through, there is one ground for the rear that connects to the deck plate mounting bolt at the right rear of the seat.

Re alternator, I am guessing like Bob said the original was replaced with a one wire internally regulated alternator and the other wires are not used now.

Good Luck

Those tractors were known for poor wire in the harnesses. The covering comes off pretty easy with time. There are several different junction blocks on that tractor also. I would just replace all the wiring with new that has the plastic insulation instead of fooling with the original junk in them. We have a couple of those a 574 and674 both have cheap crappy wiring in them. I just rewired the 574 so it starts and runs/charges and for got about lights or fuel gage. The oil gage is a wet gage and the temp gage is wet the rest don't matter. Fill with fuel when you use it and that problem is solved.

Hi Cat Guy, when you rewired your 574, did you buy a replacement wiring harness or make your own. Two years ago when we did a clutch job on my brother's 684 we fixed a few broken and bare wires by using wire splices but the 684 and 454 both could use a complete rewire.

Thanks

jimb2 : I just put new wire in to make it start and charge making my own harness. It has the 3 wire alternator. It is a diesel on both tractors. I also used the ether button for the starter engage switch. The key switch in them seemed to be a weak point in ours for the starting. Another words I turn the key then push the button like you do on the 06,56,66 series. They all use that same button switch, or at least that is the way all ours were set up when we got them.
I just bypassed all the junction blocks and went straight to the gage or switch for the connection. The 574 has a loader on and the loader frame is in front of the inside light in the fender so is useless. Don't work in the dark much anyway. The 674 the lights work yet. It just gets auger and fertilizer spreader duty putter work.
