Split Lock Washers

I am rebuilding the rearend and trans for my SMD. It has split lock washers on all of the internal and external fasteners. I am planning on replacing them all as I do not want one fatiguing and then breaking.

Do you guys recommend the standard grade or the grade 8 hardened variety? I would tend to think grade 8 is better, but maybe not in this application.

What do you guys think?

definitely grade 8 washers and bolts for that application. good idea to replace the washers for sure. bolts ? inspect and if no thread damage I would not be scared. you can feel when a bolt is stretching when torqueing.

I throw split washers into the weeds for improved iron distribution. Use a bit of thread locker from locktite and a heavy flat washer!! Split washers always let
water in to rust the threads! Jim

the split washers can also be replaced with nordlock washers. they are a two piece washer that lock together. it looks pretty ugly when you have a big flat washer on a bolt in some places. each has its own application. at work we use nordlocks and blue locktite ,.. plus all overhead bolts are lockwired or cotter pinned to confirm to the company DROPS program. don't want stuff falling out of the derrick.

Had a 43 H years ago that kept getting water in the transmission. Had to remove the top for something and found lock washers under all the bolts. Threw them away and used copper washers and never had ant problems after that.
