Grinding during shutoff 1967 IH 424

My IH 424 is making a grinding noise for a moment right after ignition has been killed. It sounds to be coming from the front of the tractor. I am admittedly new to working on tractors. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Three potential guesses: Sheet metal vibration as the engine stops and changes vibration frequency, Loose fan belt making noise as the engine slows to a stop and
changes rotational velocity each compression stroke, Loose vibration dampener ring. (no idea if it has this part) Listening closer will assist in finding it. A
trusted person and locked brakes while you stand and listen closer. A stethoscope with or without the contact "feeler" can make it simple. Jim

Thanks for replying. I will investigate further and see if i can narrow down the source.

Is it possible that it is making noise while running also but engine noise covers it ? Could be any number of things such as water pump bearing , governor issue , etc.

Jim gave you best advice as you need a helper to listen. Could be coming from hydraulic pump on right front of engine mounted close to governor.

I thought at the time it was running that i heard a noise i was unfamiliar with but as it ran i either became accustomed to it or it went away. The sound seems to come from the left side but i have not been able to stand closer to the engine and really inspect it yet.

It's certainly a possibility because this thing has been rewired numerous times bypassing connectors and junction blocks by my grandfather and father before me both of which are no longer with us. I will confess that just recently i was experiencing issues with the push button ignition. It had been wired to bypass the connector and junctions prior to me messing with it and where they had spliced into to get their hot wire wasn't providing enough voltage to engage the solenoid. I put a jumper from the switched side of the keyed switch to the hot side of the push button and it cranked just fine. Could this be causing some issue?

Also could be alternator if on left side. You could BRIEFLY remove belts and check to see if sound goes away which would indicate water pump or alternator.

Thanks for all the responses. When i get time i may try to remove the belt and try that to see if it pin points the problem.
