Camshaft Gear Timing

Rebuilding a B and I didn't see but one mark on my camshaft gear. So, I matched that with the crankshaft gear. Then when I put in the governor gear I figured that the one mark on the camshaft gear should be matched to the gear on the governor. So, I turned the crank 180 degrees and matched the marks on the camshaft and governor gears. I put the cam cover and governor cover back on as well as getting the pulley on the crankshaft. In comes my brother and says "you've got it all wrong"--that the camshaft gear has two marks on it and turn the crankshaft 180 like I did will not put the engine in sync. So, before I go to the trouble of taking all this apart again, is my brother correct? I swear I did not see two marks on the camshaft gear.

If you are using a mag the two dots on the cam must line with the two marks on the mag drive gear. You have the single marks lined the two dots on the cam gear will be where the mag gear meshes now look hard and you will see two dots on the mag gear they can be hard to see but they are there so line the mag gear with the two dots on the cam gear and you got it

It is not a mag. So, how does not being a mag change things. I'm almost certain the cam gear only had one mark on it. My brother says, no, it had to have two marks so that everything lines up.

those two dots need to align so the mag will be in time with the cam so it can fire in time with the valves in their proper alignment. But with a dist and the single dot lined with he crank and cam you can time the dist with #1 on compression as the cam is in time with the crank. The mag can only be installed two ways as the slot driving the mag only lines up in two positions and if isint timed with the cam it will not ever fire on compression. You will be OK with the dist.

When engine is on #1 TDC, #4 I&E valves will be equal in height opening and closing. Find that point and you'll find marks on crank and cam.
