need a spring

The pictured spring is the check ball spring from a 424 IH Thompson hydraulic pump. It is damaged. IH says it is unavailable. I ordered one through Parts Depot which was the exact IH part number but spring sent was incorrect . If I cannot find one I am looking at $500.00 for a pump. Does anyone have a similar one or have any suggestions as to how to find one .

Several thoughts. I recommend rely on the experience of others. Can you go to your most experienced blacksmith / mechanic / machine shop, take that spring, and ask if anybody has ever seen such a thing? Or have any idea? I can think of two locally I would go to, I would also go to the best NAPA you can find. We have some old boys here who seem to have seen everything, and always have good ideas. As I've said before, my experience is there's various NAPA's, of various abilities. Somewhere someplace some old boy has seen something similar. By the way, put some dimensions on that, how big is it??

Thanks - I am going to be trying that and have also considered Jims idea. I do not really know what the broken end of that spring looks like but guess it rounded back up and looked similar to the tapered end so it fit the circumference of the check ball .

I am considering it. Might find another short spring with circumference which fits ball. I do not know exactly what the unbroken end looks like . I will be measuring circumference and approximate length this evening . Thanks for the reply and suggestion . Frustrating that IH has the ball and cap but not the spring .

There was a tutorial on your tube, it showed a guy making a spring on the turning lathe, he's got to measure the wire with a micrometer,, and then buy some piano wire, and making one in the you tube clip, it looked just like a factory spring. Type in, making spring on your google page, just seen in couple of month's ago!

Will do, thanks .

You could try these two places. Interestingly, the one parts diagram I looked at did not show a spring like you have.

(quoted from post at 17:18:56 01/23/19) What is the part number?

Dan MD - Apparently I can only find your last post by clicking on last post as it does not appear in the forum. I can only see that you responded by saying the parts diagram you found does not look similar . I have noticed this also as I have looked at the diagram as well . It is a mystery as the construction of the part the spring fits into appears it would require a compression spring whereas the spring I have removed from the pump appears to be part of a tension spring .

See if you can see my post in the classic view. I posted a link to two different places that list having stock for that part number.
