farmall M adding belt drive

Hello, I have a 1946 Farmall M and it does not have the belt drive transmission. I would like to add this to the tractor. i'm thinking I can find a unit for sale at a tractor show. my question is: how difficult is this to add? do you simply remove the plate that is there now and the transmission bolts on ? or is there some drive gear that has to be added inside ? thank you, Kent
 
Gears should be in both tractor and belt pulley gear box. Try to get the mounting bolts and two dowel pins with box. Two bolts are long and used copper washers on them. Long bolts are stuck in box bolt holes first when installing if fuel tank is on tractor. Six 1/2 inch coarse thread bolts are used to mount box and can be found elsewhere if standard length.
 
Make sure you install the two long bolts in the middle BEFORE you start working the unit under the gas tank.

That, or remove the gas tank.

You'll get it in and all bolted down around the outside, and, "Let me just slip these last two bolts in and I'll be.... Son of a %$#!!!"

Then you get to unbolt it, pull it back out, and slip the bolts in. Ask me how I know.
 

thank you all very much ! yes I have done that very thing with bolts, I understand completely what you are saying. I may not use the belt wheel but I just really want one on my tractor. this machine was apparently ordered without one. i'm guessing there is a lever on the box that turns it on and off
 
Turn the shaft where the pulley bolts on and see if the bearings feel rough, if it was me I would put a new seal on the output shaft before you put it on. Also dump any old oil out of it and add some back so it does not start up dry.
 
I have two(or three) out back in my 'bonepile'. You can have one for picking it it up.I'm in western Colorado.
 
As others are saying, it will bolt right on; no additional parts necessary. Do check it for cleanliness before putting it on your
machine. They have nooks and crannies will collect debris over the years and more so if they have been sitting around off the
tractor.

If you come across some at a swap meet or in a salvage yard, turn the pulley end and listen/feel for excess noise or roughness.
You may not find a perfect one but you can avoid one that needs a rebuild.
 
Dad picked corn with his '51 M and 2M-E mounted picker. As the years progressed he kept removing clutter
from under the gas tank so corn leaves and husks, tassels, etc would not accumulate under the tank. The
battery was first to go, used a Super M battery box seat base, and the belt pulley gearbox was next to
go. Trash would accumulate some but not pile up like it did. He caught the tractor on fire one fall
picking corn, shot off both 2-1/2# extinguishers he carried on the picker and still didn't get the fire
in the trash out, was on his way to the water tank when it finally fell out.

I'd rather have a nice seat, or lights, maybe a radio, or fenders on my tractor than the belt pulley
gearbox. Both my '51 M and '54 Super H have had them removed. Still have them, won't part with them, but
will never use them. I removed the gearbox on the SH to mount a 2-way hyd valve, my tractor just had the
live Lift-All, and no remote valve. I'd like to change from a single spool valve to 3 spool valve
someday.
