450 starter....something else...

The last couple times I've started my gas 450 the starter kept turning after I got off the starter button.

The first time the motor started, and then I heard a whirring sound coming from the starter. I was holding a wrench and hit the starter and it stopped. It probably turned for 5 seconds.

Last week i cranked her, she started then died. The starter kept turning. I turned off the key and it kept going. I ran around the tractor, grabbed a bolt, ran back around and hit the side of the starter several times and it finally stopped. I was scared because the starter was running wide open, (loud electric motor sound), and it ran for probably 20-25 seconds.

I felt the side of the starter; it was cool. I gave her some choke, held my breath, turned on the key, hit the starter button and started her again. She started no problem and the starter stopped turning when i released the button.

Why didn't the starter stop when I turned off the key? Come to think of it, I've never hit the button unless the key was on...will the starter crank with the key off/out?

Both times the weather was cold...like 40 and a high wind.

WTH???

Starter should have a solenoid on the top or side that the contacts are sticking or burning stuck together and when that happens the starter motor stays turning . The clutch part will have kicked back out
because the engine ring gear speed is faster than the starter. Solenoid should be replace or if you are creative take the solenoid apart and turn the contact to a different spot.

Did this happen after you worked on the starter or removed and replaced wires on it, or messed with any wiring? If so you may have switched one of the small wires on the solenoid to the wrong terminal. But come to think of it if that was the case it should immediately crank when you turn on the key. I?m not sure if the posts in the type of solenoid a 450 would have has terminal posts that can be rotated to obtain a new contact surface.

Usedred, I rewired the tractor about 6 months ago; pulling the wires one by one was easy, working under the dash was a pain, but I got it done.

The first time it happened I wondered if a wire shorting against the frame under the dash could have caused it. But I'm not sure.

It HAS NOT happened every time I crank the motor, just the last 2 times I think.

if there was a short there would be smoke and then open the fuse you have a sonenoid that sticks and needs replacing its the only way that the starter can keep running unless you have the wiring messd up. Better get it fixed you have a wrench handy to remove the batt cable before you have a big fire.

Like already said the solenoid needs replaced or the to bigger bolts rotated if you can get it that far apart. The one bolt has a wire on it inside so will not move very far without breaking that wire. If you break the wire it will be solenoid time for sure. not much room to solder it back together. Don't ask.

Try turning the BAT cable bolt on the solenoid like the cat guy said. Take the wires off, loosen the rear nut, push in the bolt and give it 1/2 turn and pull back out, tighten rear nut and replace wires. On Delco solenoids the hot bolt head is what wears/sticks sometimes, and turning it will fix it in most cases unless it's already been turned. This won't work on Ford type solenoids when the large bolts are across from each other if you have that type, best replace it if that's what you have.

Please disconnect the negative terminal on the battery BEFORE you do any work on the solenoid. It is HOT with 12V power on a very thick cable, so it can pass a lot of Amps and make big scary sparks. Worst case it could weld your wrench to the starter case, causing a full-current short circuit, possibly causing the battery to explode.
