The last couple times I've started my gas 450 the starter kept turning after I got off the starter button.
The first time the motor started, and then I heard a whirring sound coming from the starter. I was holding a wrench and hit the starter and it stopped. It probably turned for 5 seconds.
Last week i cranked her, she started then died. The starter kept turning. I turned off the key and it kept going. I ran around the tractor, grabbed a bolt, ran back around and hit the side of the starter several times and it finally stopped. I was scared because the starter was running wide open, (loud electric motor sound), and it ran for probably 20-25 seconds.
I felt the side of the starter; it was cool. I gave her some choke, held my breath, turned on the key, hit the starter button and started her again. She started no problem and the starter stopped turning when i released the button.
Why didn't the starter stop when I turned off the key? Come to think of it, I've never hit the button unless the key was on...will the starter crank with the key off/out?
Both times the weather was cold...like 40 and a high wind.
WTH???
