Well on a handshake out at the combine lot Tuesday, a trucker/farmer is going to take my JD 4400 combine and I get a 1942 H if I want it. Description is

Tread decent on mains. One bad intertube. Rust around the valve stems.
Complete with PTO, lights, generator, belt pulley, liftall and rebuilt starter.
Rusty.
Engine stuck.
Head and oil pan removed.
Rods are tight on the crankshaft.
Hole in manifold.
Seat rusted out.
Radiator looks good.
It can be towed, so the transmission ain't locked up.
All parts including tin are there except for the carburetor. Previous owner supposedly has it in a box somewhere.

Story was the previous owner pulled the head and oil pan and simply gave up. The gent has had this for awhile now and has more projects then time.

I hope to see it this weekend and decide whether I want to tackle the project, part it out or not take it. I'll take some digital pictures while I am at it. Weather forecast for central Indiana is for rain so it might be sometime next week before I see it.

Red, this is a must do project for you to pick up.
Don't let it slip out of your hands. Others will be clamoring for it as soon as they hear you're interested. This tractor is sure to keep you on track to continue losing money on all your tractor projects. Good luck Red.

My thoughts on this are that you are getting the short end of the deal here. You are giving up a running combine that is in good condition for a tractor that isn't worth as much as the combine even if it was running and in good condition. Not being critical of this, its your decision to make, but I think you are getting short changed on the deal. I bet there are some factors that I don't know of in this deal, but I would expect a tractor and some money in exchange for your combine.

Yes there are other factors involved and no the combine is NOT in good condition. The engine runs and and the combine is movable but that ain't saying much. The fellow taking it has another 4400 for parts. Between the two machines, he should beable to get it field ready for less than $1,000. It would cost me another $2,500 or so.

OK, that makes more sense now. I was under the impression that this combine could go right to the field now that you got it running.

By all means go for it now! I was just a little off on the details.

From what I can tell from you will have a lot more fun with that old tractor than with a combine.

I would have liked to tackle the combine. However I have been tipped on a couple of field ready 4400s for around $2,000-2,500 near the farm. It would have cost a minimum of $300 to ship this one.

Glenn hard telling until I see it. The condition of the top of the pistons will be the real story teller. I haven't tackled a stuck H so it might be a nice challenge or very aggrivating.

Well it has been 2 years since the last H and Mrs. Red is wanting her winderseat built. I reckon the winderseat will have to wait. Heh heh.

Hey Red!

When you mentioned the "combine lot" was that the one over on the south side of old Route 40 and south of Coatesville, close that vicinity? Afore migration to the Old North State and near 40 to 50 years ago it had just sprung up. Does Coatesville still have a IH/Case dealership?

No sir. This 4400 is on West 21st. about 2 miles west of I-465 on the westside of Indy. I don't recall ever driving through Coatsville.

Red,

If you part it out, give me first chance at the spoils. I need 1942 parts bad.

Thanks,

Scott
