Farmall M throttle linkage

Got my governor all adjusted but I had a question about the spring inside the Governor I know it?s suppose to be loose at low idle but it?s loose for a couple teeth on my throttle if I adjust the linkage to tighten up the spring where it?s loose at the lowest throttle setting then tighten up quicker will this improve my throttle response I couldn?t find anything in the book about the exact recommendation I knew it just said to have the spring loose at low idle and it looks like the throttle linkage would be the only way to tighten or loosen the spring

adjust governor and linkage as per manual , at idle the spring will be loose. im quite sure the governor don't react with each individual throttle tooth, least I have never seen that.

Well that?s the thing I can?t find it in the manual I have a blue ribbon service manual but it makes sense that it?s not tooth by tooth but what is the procedure for ?synchronizing? the throttle to Governor connection?

All the IH tractors I have encountered from pre W war 2 to the hundred series have about 20 to 30% of the bottom end of the lever travel dead. No action at all. Not an issue as long as the governor control lever from the throttle hand lever moves to it's max open position. Jim

I don't remember how to do it but read it some where, maybe in the I.T. manual. Has to do with removing that vent cover on top of governor housing and adjusting the threaded rod but there's more to do than that.

Would trying to adjust the throttle control rod to pull in some slack improve the throttle response at lower rpms or would I be wasting my time? No overally considered with it but I just would like it to be as good as possible

The interaction of the governor weights, the strength of the main spring, and the leverage at the base of the weights are the only elements of response that matter. Those are not really adjustable. The M&W company made a governor replacement weight/spring set that provided a slightly quicker response to load changes than the original, but changes nothing in actual output of hp. The cruse control in a 2019 automobile is electronically signaled from the output shaft of the trans. The electronics can detect a speed change so minor that the driver can not feel or see it on the speedometer. An electronic governor would do that, but it would still not create more hp or other operational changes. The linkage to the governor is not related to the function. Jim

Here is some information on what you are requesting found out of a Motor truck & repair Manuel dated in 1945 7 edition. asked about working with a governor , adjustment for a farmall M. Showing on figure 4 with engine stopped, take off the governor housing cover and turn the governor screw until it just hits touches it stops. Place the hand lever in full speed position and turn the high idle speed screw until it just touches its stops. Finally start the engine and place the hand lever in full speed position. Then turn the High idle speed screw as required. Turning the screw in reduces speed and turning it out increase speed. Good luck on your project have a great day.

If you have the idle speed set on the carburetor at wanted speed. Unhook the linkage rod from governor lever on engine side of governor housing. After moving the cover at top of throttle housing out of way. Hold little lever on throttle shaft up as you push governor lever down and adjust the turn buckle on vertical rod so pin slides in the hole in throttle shaft lever. Now lift up governor lever and adjust the upper stop bolt so spring just holds the rocker shaft back at rear spring end. After that connect governor operating rod and adjust rod at top of bell crank so throttle lever ends up stating out in lower notch. Think you have bushings installed to help with lost movement going from idle to start of increased throttle. That also depends on how free the throttle shaft moves in the throttle tube. Sometimes if enough idle down doesn't happen you may have to back the top stop bolt out a little. Should be able to adjust so two notches or less on a saw tooth throttle speeds engine. Cold will effect them also. Some governors are sluggish starting out when real cold. Bottom stop bolt in governor is to set high RPM.

Thank you for your reply that helps out a lot I was just lost as to what to adjust first. I did get those parts with bushings installed that i got from you and everything is back on the tractor and ready to go I just haven?t fired it back up yet due to being busy but just wanted to get it close as possible before here?s a picture of my governor before and after I think it turned out well
