IH distributor bushing

I have an IH distributor from a 504 Farmall I would like to replace the bushing on it the dist housing to get some of the side play out. The parts book doesn't show the bushing. I looked in the older books
like M & 400 and same thing. Does anybody know if there is a bushing part# that would work? How much side play will a Pertonix electronic unit tolerate as compared to traditional points?

It wouldn't surprise me if there's some aftermarket bushings available, but I don't know of a source.

Bushing stock is readily available, and it's EASY for anyone with a lathe to make a bushing.

Bushing wear affects point gap, which affects dwell and timing.

Spark timing with a pertronix unit installed is affected MUCH less by a bit of sideplay in the distributor shaft.

However, a pertronix is more delicate and $$$$ than points.

If you ever accidentally leave the ignition switch "ON" and the engine has stopped at a point with the pertronix triggered it will overheat (along with the coil) and very likely all the $$$ smoke will leak out of the pertronix, and occasionally, they simply drop dead for no apparent reason, leaving the machine "dead" 'til a replacement arrives, so it's best to keep the points and any other parts removed in the changeover "just in case".

On the other hand, many on here have had no issues with those EI units, and have nothing but praise for 'em.

dist bushing kit is aviable .at steiner tractor phone 1 800 234 3280 part number ihs 3166. just check to make sure it fits your dist

Just make sure it has the oil grove in it and not someone IDEA to take your money . when making a bushing it has to have that oil grove if not then the shaft will seeze and take the oil pump shaft with it.
