CIH paint for Farmall

I am going to be painting a Farmall super A for my uncle this spring. He was at a case IH dealer today and saw farmall paint. I typically use automotive quality paint when I paint my other tractors does anybody have any experience with the case I H paint. Obviously I?m going to do the basic paint strip of the whole tractor I don?t want to skimp on the paint which I tried to explain to him but he seemed pretty interested in that paint since it was relatively inexpensive. I am typing this quickly so sorry for lack of detail, but when I say basic paint strip I mean a thorough strip down to metal. And when I paint with auto paint it?s a very good paint job. My fear is by him wanting to save money it?s going to be a low quality paint that is going to fade and look terrible in a few years. This will be my first red tractor but I?ve painted I typically have painted Minneapolis Molines. Thank you in advance for your advice and experience.

The CaseIH Iron Guard enamel is a good paint for what it is, generally regarded as the best option for color match and durability without going to multi-stage professional paints, especially if you're not a professional painter.

At least at one time, I believe it was the same paint used on the tractors in the factory. Regardless, it is a popular choice.

I used Farmall Red from the local Case IH store on a Super AV and was very pleased. I also use automotive paint most of the time. Make sure you get the correct color red (yes, just like Deere John, the colors did change slightly). I just told them the model and year. And to the point made earlier, Case IH paint is more reasonable than $600 a gallon automotive paint.

I have been painting ih tractors for last 25yr used ih 2150 red . put sinthik hardner in it had no promples. one custermer wanted auto. paint so bad had to redo. also put clear coat oh ih rsd.put I have retired now.

It's been about eight years since I bought IH paint, was about 50 bucks a gallon, used hardener in it and painted my Super M. Tractor has only been out of the shed a few times since so it hasn't seen much sun.

It's good paint for what it is, like others have said. Far better than your Rustoleums and Majics and the like.

Whether it is a closer color match just due the fact that it is on a dealer shelf is up to you to decide (I find it unlikely). A lot of guys will say pick a red you like. A lot of guys will say find a match to IH 50 instead of 2150. A lot of guys will say that they like 2150 better so use that. Some will say to find some untouched original paint and have it matched. I would bet that 2 tractors painted with 2 different shades @ 20 paces can't be distinguished as correct/incorrect by a good portion of the critics, let alone the normal crowd.

What is more important is to use a good primer, the correct hardener, and the correct thinners. These are just as important.

I've brought it up in a couple threads but haven't heard back -- I like the Van Sickle acrylic enamel NOT the cheaper stuff they make. It is a 2150 match, but I have not done a spray out or left it out in the sun along side the dealer 2150 to see a comparison over time.

Factory 2150 red was made by Moline Paint Manufacturing. There's two paint manufacturers in Moline,
Valspar and PPG.

MPM also shipped 2150 to iH suppliers, other IH plants like East Moline, Canton, and probably plants in
the Chicago area. They also supplied the 483 Federal Yellow, semi-gloss black, and other colors, like
the green and orange special colors for the custom painted tractors for a huge Carrot farm out in
California.

My 504 Farmall was painted with 2150 with nothing added. It spent at least 4 years outside. I pulled it in the shop and fixed some small stuff, washed it by hand and sold it,it still looked as good as the day it was painted. (My Super C was painted with farm store IH red, and it was white two years later.)

I have seen pictures of your Molines, I can tell you do good work! I don’t think you will be happy with the cheap paint. If you’re going to the work of sand blasting and doing body work on the sheet metal, why skimp on the paint?
