450 plug wire sequence

Got a 57 450 gas, needing to know sequence to place plug wires on distributor...i know firing order its cast into block.

The most secure way is to take the distributor cap off . Take number one spark plug out and both see what direction the rotor turns on the distributor while bringing #1 up to TDC. Once there at TDC the nipple on the cap for 1 should over where the rotor is pointing. Then put the wires on in the direction the rotor turns.

While at one time there may have been a factory set place for them who knows what has been done over the years. You need to get the #1 piston up at TDC on the compression stroke. But before you do that pull the distributor off and watch which way it turns so you then know which direction the rotor turns so you then know which way to go with the plug wires

from factory the #1 wire sits at 2 oclock position. distributer rotation is clockwise. so next wire 3 then 4 and #2 wire. can verify as others have said, but this is the factory setup. I have a bad habit of looking at this at tractor shows and can spot in a blink one that's not factory position.

that is correct. also rotation is viewed as sitting on seat or standing behind tractor, or standing behind flywheel.

And to add to what Roger says that is TDC...top dead center... of the compression stroke of the number one piston. Or when the piston is pushing air out of the spark plug hole because both valves are closed. There is also a TDC of the exhaust stroke which follows the compression stroke by one crankshaft revolution.

I like to take out the #1 spark plug and with a bright flashlight, move the engine until the piston reaches TDC.

Now there are two points where TDC (every 360 deg) is reached in the 720 degree total combustion cycle. This is a point of abstraction but its very important, because you have to find the "correct" TDC.

I like to remove the valve cover to be sure. Watch the rocker arms as the #1 piston moves thru the top of its stroke. When it is correct the rocker arms will be quiet/immobile. This is the transition between "compression" and "power".

Once you have set the base engine, then pull the distributor out and line up the rotor with one of the posts on the cap. It truly doesn't matter which one. However I like to use the 3:00 position when looking from the operator station. Then 1-3-4-2 from there around in the direction of travel of the rotor.

Should be good enough to start the tractor and fine tune from there.

(quoted from post at 12:27:12 01/16/19) IF you look at the top of the cap #1 is marked in the cap.

Not so on some of the new replacement caps.

Some china man saved .000001 cent per cap.

However most manuals seem to show where it belongs.

when #1 cyl. is at tdc on compression its running mate is on the rock. I always watch the running mate for each cyl. to make sure they are in the centre of rocking, which means they rock with the crank being turned back and forth. I never remove spark plugs to find tdc or set valves. there is no 3 oclock position for #1 cyl.
