Framall M Voltage Regulator

I'm trying to get the 6 volt charging system to work on my Farmall M. I believe it has its original generator which is a Delco Remy model 1101355. There was no cutoff relay or regulator on the tractor when I bought it. I bought the 6v pos ground voltage regulator GDR6003 and hooked field-field, arm-gen, batt-ammeter, and L to coil. I flashed the Gen and Batt voltage regulator terminals to polarize. I was not able to get any indication of generator output on the ammeter after starting. Does anyone know if the GDR6003 regulator will work with this generator? Any other suggestions?

The tractor does have the 4 position lighting switch with the original field circuit resistor in place but there is no indication it was ever used. The resistor is shorted out.

Thanks!

The L terminal does not go to the coil, it goes to the Lights. You are correct in assuming the 4 position switch
should be ignored and the wire removed when time permits. That wire is a ground for the field. If it would have
charged, the engine would not have stopped.
To see if it is the generator or not a quick test is to start it and ground the field terminal. (connected or not
to the regulator) if it shows charge when grounded, the gen is OK. if not, you need John T charging system chart. I
will attach it. next post.

Is that the reg listed for that gen as the reg for that gen needs to be a match and a just any reg will not
work so make sure that reg is made for your gen as they are listed such.

Thanks to both the Gurus. I'll dig into the John T procedure. The VR unit GDR6003 I bought was less money and looked to include both the cutout and voltage regulator relays - and it was listed as applicable to a Farmall M. The replacement for the original cutout relay consists of a cutout relay and what looks like an external field resistor all for about $90. Just trying to save a few $$ - thought the GDR6003 would work.

On the old Cutout Relay system the gennys FLD post wired to the LHDB light switch but its certainly possible to use a modern full fledged Voltage Regulator (3 or 4 terminal) PROVIDED THAT the genny is compatible with such (I have no idea if yours is okay or not)??.

FLD on VR to genys FLD post,,,,,,,,,,GEN/ARM on VR to gennys ARM post,,,,,,,,,,,,BAT on VR to the load (NOT battery/starter supply) side of ammeter,,,,,,,,,,,L could power lights or else you can ignore it and lights and other loads are fed instead from the ammeters Load terminal (where BAT on VR also wires).VR needs a good ground remember...... DO NOT WIRE GENNYS FLD TO LHDB SWITCH

Now polarize it and start it up and run my Charging Troubleshooting Procedure Professor Jim was kind enough to post
