Hello All,
First time tractor owner here and I have a question. My tractor is having issues. When i first start it and its cold i put it in first gear low and it goes fine for a while. But if i try to go any higher in gear or into the high gear the tractor does not move i let off the clutch and dont feel it want to move at all. But if I go back into first it will go when i let out the clutch, If i attempt to go up an incline it will not go. Not sure if its a clutch or fluid, etc.. My neighbor said to empty the hyd fluid make sure it has enough in it and refill because it sat for a year. that did not fix it. any ideas??

IH rookie

It sounds like the main clutch is slipping. Here is the check (easy) Put your hand (in a glove is OK) on the clutch pedal. Push down. If you can push it an
inch or a little more with easy pressure, then feel it get much more difficult to push, the free play is about right, and it may need a new clutch. If when you
push on the pedal, it seems difficult from the very top and just gets more difficult as it nears the bottom, there in not enough free play. Look up the
adjustment procedure (usually making a rod shorter or longer) and adjust as above. Best of luck. Jim

The only way hydraulic fluid would have to do with it is if the clutch is soaked with it.

On these old tractors the transmission is directly driven by the engine through a dry clutch, no hydraulics involved. It's a simple 8-speed (4 gears, high and low ranges) transmission.

Either the problem is the clutch free play is WAY out of adjustment as stated above, or the clutch is shot. Most likely the clutch is shot, unfortunately.

Thank you both for the information. I will attempt the test and see what it shows. I am also looking into buying the synchromesh clutch since the tractor sat for so long and I have no idea how well it was taken care if I may as well have one on hand if I need right now it not. Guess I had better buy the service manual so I have when needed. This forum is a god send!!!

I don't think these tractors had syncromesh transmissions. The only syncromesh transmission IH ever had in a tractor that I'm aware of was in the large 5X88 and 7X88 series tractors they made in the last 3 years IH existed as a separate company.

Yes, 54/74/84/85/95 and the x230 series all had syncromesh in gears 1-4, had to stop to change Fwd to Rev and Lo to Hi unless
equipped with fast reverse or T/A(Hydraulic Shift with engine braking in Lo).

Re clutch, if free travel is less than 7/8" then adjust by turn the clevis on the rod that connects clutch pedal to clutch release
lever behind the bellhousing. My experience on those models when clutch starts to slip, it is time for new clutch.
Replace with a 4 or 6 pad clutch, release bearing, pressure plate, and pilot bearing.
Not a difficult tractor to split if there is no FEL installed.

Thank you for the hint. i jut finally had a chance to look at it and the clutch pedal has no play at all. it is very hard from the top to the bottom. I will be adjusting it soon and will let you now how it worked.

Last Fall I had a customer bring me his 684 with the same type of problem. If you put the tractor in high gear it would not even move. If you went to 1st gear low range is would just barely move. When checking clutch pedal free play I found that the bearing carrier was against the front of the transmission and it was pushing against the clutch fingers releasing the clutch. I splitt the tractor and replaced the clutch disc and pressure plate assembly. Along with the rear engine crankshaft seals and also the seals on the transmission input shaft. Here are a few pictures of the stands that I make for splitting utility tractors.
