cub distributor

While stripping the engine on my 52 cub I removed the distributor and drive unit from the block. The shaft that drives the rotor etc. fell out, is that normal? My parts book and my servic3e manual do not show a breakdown of my IHC dist. My service manual says that complete overhaul and testing info can be found in GSS-1052-C. Where can I obtain such material?
I can just push the shaft back in but I hope there is a procedure for properly timing it other than eyeballing it and trial and error.
Any help would be very much appreciated Thanks.

SHORT version... Stuff the little pinion shaft back in place, then when you have the engine back together, and ready to time, install the "battery ignition unit" on the engine, then remove the two bolts and clamps that hold the actual distributor to the drive adapter, pull the distributor out, turn the distributor shaft so the rotor points to where it needs to be and reinstall the distributor into the drive unit, fine tune timing with minor distributor rotation before tightening the two bolts/clamps.

LONG version...
