DT466e Engine

We have a Ih farm truck with a DT466e engine that was in
need of an in frame overhaul. We disassembled it in frame
then decided to pull the engine to replace rear main seal
which I guess we should have dropped the transmission
instead. The engine has always had oil leaks since we bought
it so I decided to remove the timing gear covers and replace
their seals. I need to remove the large idler gears. I can see
that by removing the inner bolt from them the whole idler
assembly it will come off, but how much force does it take to
break those bolts loose? I can?t get them to budge and I don?t
want to break anything. Thanks for any help.

No, they are right. I can see the back of the bolts where they are threaded into the block.

Brother -in-law and I replaced the timing belt on his Honda Civic. The 12mm bolt with a 19mm head was so tight we had to use a breaker bar with a 3 foot pipe to break it loose and he is a strong man.

They are probably secured with red loctite. You don't want those bolts coming loose.

If you can see them from the back, try hitting them with some heat from a propane torch. That will cause the loctite to release.

I got them out. Bought a overhaul kit from IH Navistar and they let me talk to a mechanic. Upper bolt was torqued to 275 and lower bolt was 475. He said they were just really tight. I asked him if he ever twisted a bolt off or cracked anything, he said no. I got a 3/4 drive breaker with cheater and got them out and they are non reusable bolts.

Good to hear! Some I have encountered have been left handed. I think that is because of the direction of rotation of the gear would be the same as the direction to tighten the bolt. Mark.
