IH Farmall 340 utility

Can someone tell me if the ignition system on a 340 is 6 volt or 12 volt? I have a 340 I purchased. It had no battery on the tractor, however the coil is a 12 volt coil with a resistor attached.

the gas is 6 volts and the diesel is 12 volts. but people do strange things to 6 volt systems.

Thank you for the information. Is that system a positive or negative ground? I put a 12 volt battery on it to get it started, so I will have to get a 6 volt. The tractor was running fine one day, and then wouldn't start the next. There is no spark to the plugs or coil at all.

MY 340 gasser had a 12 volt generator on it but I since changed it to a 12 volt delco alternator for 50 bucks. if it dosent start pull the no 4 plug out lay it on the oil filter so its grounded. see if the plug has spark when you turn the motor over. if it does then probably have a fuel problem

My late serial number Farmall 340 gas also has 12 volt generator sure looks factory to me

Our IH 340 utility was 6 volt, I left it that way, it started fine.

the 6 volt will be pos ground.
