Question on Farmall H electrical.

I have a 46 Farmall H was converted to 12 volt before we purchased. We've been using it for some years now with no electrical problems. This tractor is 12 volt, magneto, generator, battery negative ground, on/off switch, starter button to solenoid. My question is: Is this setup correct?
I have a battery that has 12.08 volts but wont turn over eng. I replaced solenoid and all I get is low chatter and click of solenoid. Get new battery?

If it was working for years, then probably wired right.

12.03 is an under charged or bad battery, I would take it out, have it load tested, replace if needed, then see what voltage goes too when running.

to properly check a battery you must do a load test on it. just because it shows 12 volts don't mean its good. or put that battery in something else and try starting the thing.

Sounds like dirty and corroded contacts. Remove and clean battery posts, and where the cables hook to the tractor.Get them clean and shiney.Just because they don't 'look' dirty, doesnt mean they aren't.The starter setup is not 'factory' but is absolutely acceptable. I have an M set that way.The correct police don't like it,buy who cares,as long as it WORKS.BTW,before you actually buy a new battery, have the old one tested-after you clean the cables.

What is the battery voltage when you try to engage the starter? If it drops to below, say 10 volts then the battery is bad. If it stays near 12 volts then you have a bad connection or bad starter, selenoid or switch. Having said all that 12.08 sounds like a dead battery to me. Check charging voltage when you get it running. Should be 13 or 14 volts. A lead acid battery should charge at around 2.25 volts per cell X's 6 cells = 13.5 volts.

Your battery is discharged a good bit. A full charged battery will read 12.50 volts plus anything less if a badly discharged battery and needs to be charged and or replaced

Put in new battery, started right up. I've replaced many batteries in my time but this battery must have had an internal short or something because at 12.08 volts it never even tried to turn over, and when I put a hotshot on it, it wouldn't turn over and sparked at ground. When I put the charger on it it shot the needle to 0 then shot the needle to 6. I think it had a short or change in polarity.

Put a voltmeter across the new battery, as other stated, should be 13.5 to 14.5 while running.

You could run the new battery down if issue with charging system.

Yes, I plan on checking generator.6

there u go, buy yourself one of those load testers for 50.00 and you will tell in seconds if the battery is good or junk. just testing voltage is not accurate.

I have a load tester, just didn't see a need for it. That battery seemed to have a problem I never encountered before. It said 12.08 volts but never even turned the engine. I've had batteries with less volts still try to turn over. I still think there was either a reverse in the polarity or some kind of short. Anyway, I had to turn in as a core. I will test generator today as I will use the tractor to haul firewood. Thanks to all for their response.

Generator is charging at well over 13 volts at half throttle.
