Can these belts be rehabbed after being in the barn for the last 40 years? If so, how? Or, is it now just a wall ornament?

Put it on the pulleys. If it doesn't crack or break it will probably work. We used the belt on the buzz saw for years. It was an old belt when I was a kid and i'm almost 60 now. I would try it. Just don't speed it up for a minute to see how it flexes around the pulleys.

I'm 64 and the last time it was used was when I was a teenager. My granddad had a hammer mill he used to crush corn for his cows. It was also used with a buzz saw before someone used the saw and got the blade hot and it warped. I'm trying to find a sorghum mill that will run off PTO and a belt. The mill I have now is the old horse drawn type (I use a side by side though).

(quoted from post at 20:06:20 12/30/18) Sun is the biggest destroyer of rubber on tires so if it was kept inside it will probably be ok. IMHO

I'd say it's a canvas belt, not rubber. It looks a lot like the belt we used on our hammer mill in the 80s, I'd start off slow, see what happens.
Our neighbor used a rubber belt from a round bale baler, it worked good also.

Best thing is to run them and see. While turning at a low RPM and not tight, use a brush and clean both inside and outside of belt. Then I either spray belt dressing or use beeswax to soften and gain gripping strength. Slowly increase speed and brush the beeswax into the belt. Check that it is tracking or adjust.

Warm it up in the house. I would put the two most kinked spots in hot water and when warm, I would open them out to flat. this would give it a fighting chance to not crack. Jim

I agree with Janicholson. In the winter time I bring my belts in the house and let them get warmed through, especially the kinks before I use them on the buzzsaw. The belt I am using was given to by my grandfather's friend who bought in 38. Still good as new. I store my belts in large ammo cans, like the 20mm size. It seals them from the weather and they dont mold or rot. And you dont have to worry about bugs getting to them.

I now use rubber belts off of round hay bailers, 8in wide i think. I took 2 of them to a local tractor/machinery dealer, and had them relace the belts. I hooked them together and it was LONG. BUT for whatever reason the buzz saw ran smoother. Ive long since taken them apart and only use one of them. They charged me $20 to relace one belt.

J had a belt like that my buzz for about 40 years and never took off until 5 years ago when lacing got bad and belt was showing its age. Replaced it with a rubber belting. Tractor and saw never set outside if not in use.
