IH 350 TA problem

We have a problem that has us stumped. We restored a IH 350 utility which included installing a remanned TA, the old one was shot. Cannot get the new one to work. In taking off the inspection cover we noticed the clutch disc doesn?t get squeezed between the clutch carrier and the clutch cover assembly, pressure plate. The clutch release bearing does push against the release levers to disengage the disc, but when engaged the release bearing is way off the levers. If the clutch disc was installed backwards causing something to hit the discs hub, there would be pressure on the disc but it seems to be still very loose. The disc is .320 inches thick as recommended. We may have to split the tractor again to see what gives. Thanks for any thoughts on this problem, fun times.

If the tractor will freewheel forward in 4th gear (pushing it by hand, not driving it) the TA pressure plate is (as you describe) loose, and not providing direct drive. If it is tight against the pressure plate, and the tractor won't move the plate is in backwards. Moving the ta lever rearwards should release the TA clutch. Lever forward should pinch the disk and be direct drive. I do not think there are any assembly bolts in that pressure plate that would keep it relaesed. If it is a purchase from a rebuilder, they should assist in diagnosing the issue. Jim 350U owner
 
Ok, here?s the update - fun day today! Split the tractor and diagnosed the TA problem. Back when we disassembled the tractor over a year ago, we
installed 3 cap bolts with washers into the tapped holes to keep the pressure plate assembly under compression. Well, upon reassembly...somebody
(looking in mirror) forgot to remove them. That?s what was limiting the pressure plates movement to squeeze the clutch plate. Quickly removed them
and reassembled the tractor. The TA now works like a charm!! Thanks for the inputs.
