42 Farmall B

Love this site and thank you all ahead of time for the advice. This is my first old Farmall and I?ll be asking a lot of stupid questions probably. Yes I?ve ordered a set of manuals, they haven?t arrived yet. Does anyone have a pic of what the hood hooks actually hook to? Mine are dangling but I don?t see anything that they?ll reach to hook to. Tractor is running and I?m beginning to go thru it to see what it needs . Thank you in advance for putting up with my ignorance on these tractors!!

A couple of little brackets and 'straps'. Look closely and you will see them.Obvious, unless someone removed them.

The hood's front hooks grab the flat (kinda U shaped) bar that braces the top of the radiator. This brace attaches between/to the top engine coolant outlet on the block and the sides of the radiator. The rear hooks grab the kinda angle iron looking tabs found on each corner of the gas tank. Early Bs used Dzus fasteners to attach the hood. If someone changed the gas tank, you may have a mixture.

Back when I built my BA I had the option of either type of hood lock and I went with the hook type. If you pull the hood off you should be able to figure out which hood it is set up for then if the older type lock find a good used hood to match. I do not remember if I still have it but I may have a hood with the older type locks still laying around.

Remove the hood and then you can see how it fastens. The j-hook hoods fasten different than the 1/4 turn ones even the radiators are different so you dont want a mixture of the parts cause it just dont work.

Dzeus fasteners were only used in 1939 & 1940. 1941 & up will have the "J" Hooks.

It may have an older radiator, or it may be an older tractor, or who knows what somebody may have changed or modified over the past 76 years?

The hooks you see are for you to grab with your hand. What you can't see are the upside down hooks under the hood. Look for them then follow others instructions.

"you dont want a mixture of the parts cause it just dont work"

Ha ha, I can vouch for that!

I have a "mutt" "A" with the "J-hook" hood, and nothing for them to grab.
