Overrunning clutch - Farmall 450

I am looking to do some rotary mowing in the spring with the F450. Looking for some input - is the use of an overrruning clutch necessary? I do have one on our Farmall 230 but wasn’t sure if one was needed with the IPTO on the F450.

A 450 has a live independent PTO so no need to waste your $$ on a ORC. Engine clutch has zero control on the PTO in that tractor

I don't have one when I brush hog with my 300U but you need to be careful how you stop the PTO. Using the bands on the IPTO as a brake for the machine could be expensive.

Thanks fellas. I did not think it was necessary with the live pto, bit I needed some confirmation. And Charlie, thanks for the caution on stopping the pto. I hadn’t thought that far ahead yet.

I use one on all my tractors that I use on my brush hogs to keep from burning out the brake bands on my IPTOs. 560,340,520 and 720. I don't like to spend the extra money on the 560 and 340 pto bands which on mine are like the 450 are very expensive to have made because they are no longer available from IH. And when you go to stop the pto they will burn or wear out your bands. Or they have on mine until I started using an over running pto clutch. But maybe my tractors are different then yours. john

In my opinion, you don't need one on a tractor equipped with Independent Live PTO. Latching the PTO lever forward applies the brake. If you would wait for the mower to "spin down" before latching the lever forward, you should be fine and have minimal wear on the brake band. That is what I do on my 560 which is a similar setup for the PTO...early 560s that is.
