SMTA serial number question

Hello looking at another SMTA and have a question about the serial number. Tag is 83000 DS, tractor appears to have always been a gas tractor. I thought that the D was to designate a diesel tractor? Does DS mean something else? Tractor looks complete but I am sure stuck from settin outside for last 15 years. Will take a look in a couple days and see how valuable they think it is. Thanks, Mike

The suffix letter "D" indicates it is configured for a 5000 foot altitude working environment which will include various components for operation at an increased elevation above the standard altitude tractor. They also made an 8000 foot altitude model which is designated by the Letter "E". The letter "S" indicates it has a TA with provisions for the 540 rpm independent PTO. The 83000 s/n indicates it was one of the last 500 or so produced during 1954.
