Farmall SuperH

I am working on fixing the brakes on my SuperH I am replacing the acuator springs but can not figure out how to get them back on and hooked. ANyone have a trick for doing this. Also, the very outside cover that bolts on has a surface the disc brakes would rub against it is very pitted and rough is there a way of filling in the pits. The surfaces on the actuator and the very inside are pretty decent. any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

If I remember correctly you can resurface them in a lathe if they are not too bad. You need to keep track of how much you remove and take the same amount off the flange face. Maybe someone has a better memory than me and can correct me if I am wrong.

Vise-grips to grab and pull the spring and a punch to guide the spring is the method I have used. You should still get brakes even with pits. The actuator can wear to a point where the outside holder will need to be machined down to take some clearance out.

Just finished renewing the brakes on my SH. Like CharlesTX suggests, grabbing the spring loop with needle nose vice grips then using a slim punch to guide the loop onto the ear works well. Place the actuator on the floor and hold it down with your foot as you do this.

Don't be too concerned about pitting on the cover braking surface. One side on mine was pitted quite badly. Smoothed the surface best I could with a 1/4 sheet sander and #60 then #120 paper. Despite the pits remaining, both brakes now work like new.

As far as the covers tale them to a machine shop and have them turned. You must also take the same amount off the surface where the cover mounts against side of tractor.

Put the two halfs in a vise with balls in place and just use a regular pair of pliers. That's how I do it.
