hydraulic pump

I have almost confirmed that hydraulic oil is getting into crank case via the hydraulic pump. I plan to do a dye test and confirm . Hydraulic reservoir loses oil and crank case gains oil . I have about eliminated all other hydraulic leaks so pretty sure this is the case. This is on my 424 IH . Anybody have any experience replacing oil seals in this type pump ? If it requires a press I will probably need to take to a machine shop, if not I can probably handle it . Any input appreciated .

If it's the same as a C/SC,no press is required. The pump seal has failed. No "dye test" is needed.Take it off, tear it down,Take the seals to NAPA for a match. Clean the shaft with emery cloth.Pay extra attention to the seal 'groove'..Put it together, put it on the tractor. Done, back in business.

(quoted from post at 10:39:53 12/17/18) The caveat being if the shaft is extremely worn the new seal will last about 5 minutes...

Thanks. Seals are readily available. Guess I will take it off , check shaft , bushing and seal and proceed accordingly.

NO need for chancing that a NAPA counter guy is gonna set you up with the wrong seal by looking at it.

Here are the FIAT part numbers, if you don't want to go to a dealer, other sources can probably cross the number. You didn't mention if it's a gas or a diesel, so...

Diesel engine 424 hydraulic pump shaft seal #708422R91

Gas engine 424 hydraulic seal number (Thompson pump) #381369R91

Gas engine 424 hydraulic pump seal number (Cessna pump) #596548R91

NO need to take the pump apart, unless leaking between the sections, or the shaft is badly grooved.

CAREFULLY (so as not to scratch the seal or the bore) pull the oil seal out with a sheet metal screw.

Thanks . Yes, I have verified that dealer has the parts in stock. I have found a great PDF file for all IH tractor parts which is invaluable to me as well. Local mechanic feels like odds are good that shaft bushing will be badly worn but I am hoping not . Ive been encouraged to try stop leak but I just have no faith in that stuff long term nor do I trust it not to cause long term damage to other seals and o rings in the bottle . Maybe I can get by with just the seal and have it easy , for once .......

If shaft bushing IS badly worn, sadly, pump is JUNK, as that will have allowed the gear(s) to wallow into the housing around the gears, and will allow oil to slip past the teeth, making the pump "weak", especially when the oil is warm and thin.
