Farmall m hydraulics

Have been told a few things, looking for live hydraulics on my 1949 m, started to research and source parts for pump that runs off Dist drive, was told by some the cam gear is pressed and not keyed, would spin the gear on shaft with extra load from pump, yet I see it done, also if I do this the suction side come from belly, to the aux pump and pressure goes to a spool valve, then to cylinder, remotes, wherever, do I still need the belly pump engauged, I wouldn't understand why, it is making 800 psi now, is this good spec, would also all this to look neat/tight, any pics or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks dusty

you are getting some real bad advice. The cam gear is always keyed. The later gears made for the live pump had more meat in the spokes. I have a m+w pump with the plumbing that I would take $400 for the whole works. It was on my old loader M. It would lift a five bottom plow.

To make a reliable live setup, the cam gear needs to be changed to (best) a 450 or 400. The front cover needs to be changed to a
1950-1/2 or newer M or 400/450. The older cover bolt pattern is off by 1/2 bolt diameter, (could be filled and redrilled, but not
worth the effort if you replace the gear. The pump needs to come from a stage 2 SM or 400/450. Jim

why do I need to change cam gear, will it not hold the load, as I said I've heard both ways looking for definitive awnser thank dusty

randy, I'd be interested in your setup, my email is open, have many questions , routing, spool valve etc. thanks dusty

To use the belly pump as a reservoir, draw from the bottom drain.Return to a tee in the fill,or back to the drain using a Tee.No need to actually 'use' the belly pump that way.

The gear was not intended to be loaded with a hydraulic pump. It was OK for running the distributor, and making the cam go roundy
round, but many have failed and made a modest pile of grief. The holes in the gear make small spokes between them. The later
gears are steel and way more robust. Jim

As Jim said, the cam gear is NOT strong
enough and will self destruct. If dead set
on live hydraulics then update the cam gear
and front timing cover for use with the
factory style pumps used on tthe late super
m-450.

Little while ago I finished fixing my 400 gasser. The hydraulic pump was filling the engine with hydraulic oil. Removed the hyd pump to find someone had tried to put shim stock to take up gap between shaft & gear, key way was worn out. Wiggled the cam gear, of coarse its loose. Removed gear cover & took off nut with my fingers. The gear had some missing teeth, camshaft was damaged. Stole good used parts out a Super W6 I have to fix up the 400. Seems to me the 450/400 aren't any better than the Super M or M's. Pretty sure 1200 psi most you will get out of the system. Good luck.

I bought a parts M the other day, power steering, live pump and valve, M & W hand clutch. Had been under a 2 row picker all its life but sat for last several years. I might part with pump but can't say it is good after setting for so long.
