m power steering

I just bought an M parts tractor with power steering, live pump, and M & W hand clutch. The steering pump bolts to the side of the gov. housing, has an external reservoir, and has what looks like a Car-Lynn motor behind the gauges, under the hood. My question is, I have an H the grandson is fixing up. Should most of this fit? What about the live pump or hand clutch? Should I just look for a running M and use parts on it?

The hand clutch will not fit an H. The live/'mag' pump wont either.Basicly,no M parts will fit an H.

The torque generator will probably work, but you will need to cut the shaft. the power steering bracket will probably have to be modified as well. But an H doesn't need power steering.Unless it has a big loader on it. Hs steer pretty easy.

I'm with delta on this H's steer pretty easy unless you hang a lot up front Loader cultivator or such. Grease in the bearings helps the most though.

If they are too small to steer it,they are too small to be driving alone.they will get used to it and grow into it as well.

That Char-Lynn pump is probably the same as what an H would use, but the mounting bracket is different. On an H, the pump is mounted up, under the hood, and a hole must be cut in the hood to allow access for the reservoir filler cap.

For what it's worth, I grew up driving an H with a McCormick #31 loader. That H did not have power steering. Never gave it much thought at the time, just drove it. I now a very similar H, also equipped with the #31 loader. THIS H has Behlen power steering. The difference is night and day.

If the pump that you have is a Behlen, I don't see why it won't fit on an "H". I put one on my "A" John Deere. Get the right bracket to mount the torque generator on the "H". Find a place to mount the reservoir. I like that kind of stuff.

Last winter I mounted Char-lynn power steering on a Farmall H My customer did not want to cut the hood so I mounted the reservoir tank where the gas starting tank was original located. I had to make a special fitting to connect the hose from the tank so it would clear the hood. For mounting the torque generator you need a special wedge piece to get the angle correct and then drill some holes in the steering support. I should have all the patterns if you are interested.

That looks like what I have. I sure don't want to cut a hole in the hood. I junked some that were cutout just for an alternator. I have a couple extra shafts so I can play around a little. Like lots of folks I grew up with tractors that did not have ps but I really like it now. Thanks, I may get back to you.

I put power steering on my H that has a belly mower on it. I mounted the pump on left side and made my own res. out of square tube and mounted it under the hood. Didn't have to cut the hood for anything to fit. This is now a real tractor.

I have installed many GM power steering pumps on M Farmalls. They fit like a glove under the hood and nothing is visible, but you have to remove the hood to check the oil which you have to do any way on the regular Char Lynn system.

Don't want to cut the hood. So you will have to remove the hood everytime you need to add oil.And scratch,dent....I would think a nice access hole (like the hole for a starting tank) would be acceptable. And easier than removeing the hood all the time.Like the guy who didn't want to weld a chain hook on his (brand new) loader bucket. He would have rather had the chain slip and ruin his perfect 560 grill. It did.
