Start one end in the groove. spiral it ans smush it toward the center as you push it down tward the groove and work your way around slowly. Jim

The brand name for that type of retaining ring is a Spiroloc. They are used in a lot of machined housings such as pumps and gear boxes because they work well and take up little space verses a snap ring. They are also called a spiral retaining rings. I would be surprised if you even have a ring groove left on the inside of the thermostat housing. I have a 53' and it was completely gone.

it has plenty of grove left..i bought housing with good grove...tractor did not have one on it when i bought it ,an missing alot of other parts.............almost done with finding them all.......dewy
