Cub gov cover

It's been about 12 years since I last used my cub. I decided to bring it up to my garage to get it going again. I have to take the gov.
cover off to free up the throttle arm. It looks simple, but am I in for any surprises when I pull the cover off, say parts dropping, or
springs flying? I am a mechanic, I just never got into a cub engine before.

That is not the governor cover, that is the entire governor. t also drives the distributor, and resulting in the distributor needing retimed. The throttle arm can normally be freed up by spraying the shaft with penetrating oil and letting it set a few days.

Yea John but the cover is there and he ask if there were any suprises so I showed him what was inside.
He had a picture of the cover in his picture.

Just trying to help.

I kinda wondered if that was the case, I have the dist off now anyway cause I want to put the mag back on. It's on #1 tdc
right now. Is that how they time the gears? I just can't believe that arm won't free up.

f you are very lucky it will work that way. The idler gear has to be timed to the crankshaft gear, and the governor gear has to be timed to that. If at sometime someone has had the front cover off and not gotten them timed correctly the magneto will not work even if only off by one tooth. A distributor can compensate for the difference by repositioning the drive, but a magneto cannot.

This is how the governor drive slot has to be when any cylinder is at TDC for a magneto to work

Now that you bring the mag up. I could never get the damn thing to run right with the mag. I wrote it off as not having solid wires on it, but last week when I
pulled the dist and all the wires off I saw that it DID have solid wires on it. Then I started thinking the wires not might be that great. But now that you say
that, I'm wondering. It's possible the front was off before we got the tractor. I'm familiar with the Gov drive slot being at the 1:30-2:00 position, and that's
where It's at, but I never checked it with all cylinders, I assumed they would all be at the same spot.

I haven't checked the rotor timing yet. Since I'm working on the MD too, I was planning on getting both mags redone at the same time. I'm not real familiar with
taking apart mags and redoing them, my old man always did it. I guess that's one of those things I wish I would've learned more about when he was alive.
