Farmall C crankshaft failures

I've read of several people breaking crankshafts in these engines. I am just curious of what is the cause of this and if it is more common in this engine versus others.

Thanks,
Dan

As noted by Teddy52, The effort to make a puller, or dragster out of an engine designed to produce in the area of 25 hp on a good day causes it. They have a cast 3 main bearing crank. If a person was crazy rich and had a billet crank made for one, and 4140 steel rods, it would probably tear up some other part. These engines last 7,000 hours at rated hp and rpm. (with care and modern oil) No issue. Jim

The one in our C broke, some time in the middle fifties. As far as I know, that engine was bone stock. I put pistons and sleeves in it in 197?, and the pistons that came out were cast iron flat tops.

More recently I broke the crank in an IH 330, that is a C135, basically the same engine, with bigger pistons and longer stroke. It also turns faster, and makes almost twice as much horsepower. A local tractor jockey says that he has seen quite a few bare blocks here and there, with no crank, the assumption being that it broke and was scrapped.

Our 340u broke its crank in the late '70s. Also a c135. It did not hurt anything-the engine still turned over. Dad was plowing, heard it crack, and shut it off. Then he called me to come check it out. I remember we just stood the whole front of the tractor on its nose, and worked the crank in that way, since the engine had had a recent overhaul and was in good shape otherwise. Mark.

Do you remember what kind of work you were doing when you broke these cranks?

I don?t remember the C personally, Dad said it just quit while he was driving down the road. The dealer?s mechanic diagnosed it over the phone,
so it must have happened more than once.

Th 330 broke while it was being used on a York rake, grading a driveway. It didn?t stop running, just made a horrible clanking noise.
