Farmall 806 Shifting

Tractor won't go in reverse all the time. At idle the tires move a little but when you let the clutch up it just grinds a little. Thanks for any help.

Normal problem . So heres what ya need to do . First ya start at the top at the shifter and work your way down . Ya need to tighten up as much slop as you can. because a little here and a little there add up . You have little as i call them cub cadet tie rod ends up under the cowl on both shifters they need to be tight , next on down you have two headed pins that ware and add in slop replace them with the same length pin. , next ya have the shifter lever going into the top of the range transmission cover that has a key and a pin that go into the shifter cam . The cover has two hooles in it where linkage sicks thru one is for the shifter shaft and one is for the rev. shifter bell crank . They get wore out and allow slop , can't have slop all must fit nice . The shifter cam gets woren and at times it needs replaced , then ya have a couple rollers that break at times due to hard slam shifting , then ya have the shifter detent spring and roller and on to the rev. shifter shaft that runs down to the rev. shift fork and on the bottom of that shifter shaft is a small key and it gets wollowed out and causes slop , then at times i have found broken rev shifter forks. All this starts with letting the clutch linkage get out of adjustment and that is when the tugging and jerking start on the shifter levers to get in and out of gear . When the clutch linkage gets out of wack then the dump valve and trans brake do not do there jobs . I have rebuilt many over the years and on some it is and easy fix and on others i had to rebuild or replace everything . from outside all the way inside . Now as for me to say i know what is wrong with yours i can not do that as i am not looking at your tractor and your more then likely not even close to me for me to take a look. Now if you have to go deep down in while you are there if this tractor has not been upgraded NOW is the time to install the new Spring loaded park lock . Have more questions then let me know.

Yes the linkage is worn. But the biggest culprit is in the 'range cover'. The bushing that the shifting cam goes through is worn/wallered,letting the cam wobble. The wopbble causes it to not travel enough to engage the gears. The easiest way to fix is to replace with a new rebuilt cover. Nor a hard job. Remove the floorboard. The cover is about 8x12",right under the deck.unhook the linkages, remove the6/8 bolts and lift off. Sometimes you can adjust the linkage to get some relief, but it will be short lived, and High range will be compromised.Best to just replace the cover. And while you are there, replace the (old style)park lock turn buckle with a new improved spring loaded turn buckle.
