656 stick in low side

I borrowed a 656 from a friend once an TA lever wouldn't move unless you used your foot or some leverage. I forced it and broke the shaft under the dash. If that is your problem, lever won't move, try to get some oil on moving parts. If it hasn't gotten used much it may just be sticky.

If shift linkage is intact and lever moves like normal to direct or fast speed side, the T/A clutch assembly needs inspected to see what's keeping it from locking the main clutch shaft to the T/A clutch carrier. Common cause is a T/A clutch pressure plate problem or lining coming off the clutch disc.

The lever and linkage move fine. Driving it up and down the road it won't shift out of the low side. Is there some adjustment in the linkage for the TA or is more than likely an internal issue?

What makes you think it is stuck in the LOW side specifically?

If the tractor freewheels down hills and shifts smoothly, then it is in low. If you are having difficulty shifting, and the engine holds the tractor back down hills, then it is in high.

Assuming that it is indeed "stuck" in low, the TA clutch is probably shot from being out of adjustment. The tractor will need to be split and the IPTO shaft and gear removed to replace the TA clutch.
