424 hydraulic lift

First attempt to upload to upload picture . I am trying to replace an o ring located on draft plunger in rear of housing. I am still studying options but currently think I will have to remove shaft held by these ( pictured ) in order to be able to gain access room . My question is do I use a punch to turn these or is there a tool . There is one on each side of lift housing so it will be twice the fun. [/url][/i][/b]

I would think it would be easier to remove the complete lift housing for repairs, to be able to tun it over and access the linkages from the "bottom" than to take all that extra stuff off inside.

Did you ever get a factory manual?

I will try to remember to grab mine today and see if they describe this repair.

Call me crazy but I'm pretty sure that you cannot access from the bottom. This is one piece as far as I can see by eye examination. I do not have the best service manual available but hope to study the one I own more. I have been relying on a Hoobers internet PDF file to study parts. I had hoped to simply disengage a rod and pull the thing out from top but it appears the mechanism is linked in two or three places and I have doubts it would work. If I had stick man arms this would be a 10 minute procedure. But I usually run into such as this .......

I do think I will purchase another manual for this tractor . Which would be best ? I purchased one years ago but it looks like it was pieced together in China from bits and pieces of other manuals . Not satisfied at all with it .

You need IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual GSS-1312C.

I got busy today and didn't have time yo look for mine to see what it had to say about the draft control plunger seal, sorry.

If you do ebay, look at Auction #332355742875.

Bob,

Thanks , I will order it . I spent some time with a light peering into that lift reservoir last night and also put my phone inside it and took some pictures . I believe I can disconnect the assembly at a location which is easily accessible and possibly pull the whole thing out . It consists of 2 or 3 linked rods and a spring . The challenge[if that works ] will be to thread it back down and then into the draft plunger hole in the back of the housing . I am considering attaching a wire or string to the plunger from the outside and pulling it through and then using that string to thread it back though after I install the o-ring . The other possibility will be to use a flexible magnet and a helper to help me fish it back into and through the exterior hole in the housing . There is always an easier way and I do not want to remove all that linkage [ which nobody has responded to my original inquiry anyway ] if I can avoid it .

Yep, I've seen that same view on my 424, like I told you before, I need to get in the "lowering valve" area, and plan to take the lift mechanism off of the tractor.

Did you look at the manual link I posted?

I got a blue ribbon service number and ebay auction number from your post . Plan to order the manual . I am somewhat confused as to how pulling the lift helps in servicing it . The hydraulic reservoir on this tractor is separate from the transmission and is a " self contained " unit which uses its own hydraulic fluid separate from the tranny fluid . Maybe something I am misunderstanding ?

I was able to pull the entire assembly out the top access panel this evening. It is about 20 inches long with all the rods, springs, links, etc. It
required quite a bit of " finagling " prayer , and holding my tongue just right but so far so good. Hope to put the o-rong on the plunger tomorrow and
then try to " thread " it back into the housing and out the draft plunger hole . I sure hope this stops my leak because it has been a lot of work and
stress.
